Dylan's eyes went wide as we entered the park. He was looking everywhere all at once. He glanced at me.
"What are we going to do first?" He asked me shyly.
"Whatever you want to do. I brought you here to have fun so, its your choice." I smiled at him.
He blushed and looked away. "Ok then how......about that one." He pointed to the swing ride.
I nodded, "Ok, sure."
He looked down at the ground as we started to walk over there. When we reached the ride we showed the man our wristbands. He nodded and walked us over to a couple swing.
"Sorry, this is the only available seat right now. I hope you don't mind."
I glanced at Dylan. He was staring at the swing then he looked at me.
"Well, Dylan? Its up to you. We can share this one or we can wait till later."
He looked from me to the swing. I was secretly hoping he would choose to wait but, i have a good feeling that fate hates me.
He chose to go now.
So, we both sat down in the couple swing and buckled up. The man came by checking everyone's belt to make sure no one would fall out during the ride.
The ride started and we went up. Then we went around slowly, picking up speed. As we were going around for the second time i looked over at Dylan. He was smiling brightly.
His smile is nice. He should smile more often. I thought to myself as I watched him.
The ride ended about five minutes later and we exited the area. After that we went on the boat ride, the roller coaster and some others.
Each ride we went on i watched as Dylan became happier and happier. He looked like he was having the time of his life. As the sun was setting i turned to Dylan.
"Hey, i always go in the Farris Wheel during this time. Its always the prettiest when the sun sets."
He looked at me and smiled. "Ok. Then should we go now?"
I nodded. "Yeah, sure."
We headed in the Farris Wheels direction. Once again we showed our wristbands, were lead to a car and we stepped inside and sat down. We waited for the other passengers to get into cars then the ride began to move.
I sat and watched as Dylan looked over the side. Every now and then he would point something out to me. I would look at it then sit back again. He was like alittle kid.
We had gone around once and were almost to the top for the second time when all of a sudden the car came to a halt.
Now i hadn't been to the amusement park in a long time but, i knew they never stopped the cars until it had gone around five times. I looked over the side and saw a commotion by the control booth.
Dylan must have guessed there was somthing wrong because his smile disappeared and he looked somewhat panicked. He glanced at me and asked, "Um...Jason? Why......why did we stop?" He looked scared again.
I forced a smile. "I'm not sure. There seems to be somthing wrong with the control booth."
His eyes widened in panic. He suddenly curled himself into a small ball and put his head in his knees.
"Dylan?" He didn't respond. I stood up and walked to the other side of the car.
"Dylan! Are you alright?" I tapped him on the shoulder. He jumped and looked up at me. I smiled, "Everything will be fine soon. You don't have to worry."
He just stared at me with those scared eyes of his. I sighed and wrapped my arms around him. He leaned into my shoulder and hide his face in my shirt.
Ok, now, i know what your thinking. Why am i hugging a boy i just met? I have had foster brothers and sisters all my life. My mom and dad always said that if someone was sad or scared all they really needed was a hug. So whenever one of the new kids would start crying they would tell me to hug them. It became somewhat of a habit and so it just feels natural to do that. There is nothing more to it than that so, don't get the wrong idea!
He still had his face in my shirt when i said, "Hey the sunset is really pretty, you should see it."
He sat there for a second then lifted his head and looked at me. "Why are you so nice to me? Everyone else was mean to me or just plain out ignored me." He looked sad when he said that.
I smiled down at him. "Because your a good kid and need a friend and i like you. If you'll let me I'd like to be your friend."
He looked shocked then he blushed and nodded. "Ok. I've never had a friend before. I'd like that."
"Never?" I asked kind of surprised. Who wouldn't want to be friends with him? He's so nice.
He shook his head. "Well then let me be your first friend." He looked up at me as i held out my hand. "Lets start this over. Hi, I'm Jason. Nice to meet you. What's your name?"
He gently took my hand and shook it. "I'm Dylan. Nice to meet you too." He said shyly.
"Now lets get to know each other better." I suggested.
We sat there for a while just talking. Then, about an hour later, the ride started up again and we were brought safely to the ground.
We got off the ride and exited the park. We walked home talking the whole time. As we were nearing what was know to all the teens in town as the 'world's edge' Dylan stopped walking and looked over the railing.
"Dylan?" I asked curiously.
"You know i always thought that if i finally did get away from my home i would come here and jump off the 'world's edge'." He smiled sadly.
I gasped. "Dylan! Don't say something like that! You shouldn't even consider something like that no matter how much you hate your life!"
He looked at me seriously. For the first time he didn't look scared. "If you had lived in that place you would have thought the same thing." He said it with a bitter tone.
I frowned, still not happy he said something like that. "Doing something like that won't acomplish anything."
"You sound like you've had experience with that kind of thing." He looked at me curiously.
"My best friend jumped off of the 'world's edge' when i was twelve. His dad had left for a business trip and the plane crashed on its way back. He was so upset he jumped over the rail." I looked down trying to hide the fact that i was on the verge of tears. "I was with him when he heard the news, when he was at the funeral and when he took his last breath in the hospital after he jumped. It was the worst day of my life."
I was crying by now and i pressed my sleeve to my eyes to try to stop. Dylan looked at me sadly then came over and gave me a hug. I sniffled into his shoulder.
We stood there for i don't know how long just holding each other. When we finally pulled away from each other i had stopped crying and was in a better mood.
He smiled at me and we turned to walk home together.
