I'm really awful at figuring out chapter lengths so if one's really auper short and the other one is really super long, sorry! Also I always forget to like spell check so, if there's a spelling mistake or something tell me. Okay cool. Here's my little scribbling.
Heat. It surrounded us, suffocated us, tortured us. It crawled around, finding every crack, every crevice, every imperfection. We were drowning in it, but we continued. If we didn't, we were done. Told to leave, dispersed. I couldn’t be dispersed, I had to stay.
A kick to the stomach snapped me out of my daze.
“Ann, you idiot, have you even been watching what you’re doing?” The pain was gone now replaced with a dull fear. I hadn’t been watching.
“Fix it or you can pack your bags.” He turned away from me and walked back towards his office. Jameson, that was the name he went by. He was a cruel man at times. Cruel, but just. Yet here I was digging my hands through soft soil in the heat of the day because he continued to pay me. As long as I stayed in line. If I didn’t mess up or cause turmoil, the money flowed. So far I have stayed behind the line. I haven’t attempted to even put a toe over it. Jobs were scarce out here. In fact they were scarce everywhere except the big city. The big city didn’t allow people like me even to breathe on their soil so that was definitely out of the picture. So when I snatched my job on the farm at the age of fourteen it was surprising. So, to make a living I couldn’t do anything wrong and I hadn’t. At least not for the past two years.
Darkness spread over the farm like a navy blue blanket. No clouds decided to cover up the twinkling stars tonight. It was breathtaking.
“Ann! You know how we’re getting that new kid tomorrow?” a voice bellowed. I whipped around and saw one of my best friends sprinting up to me.
“Yeah, of course,” I responded.
“Well, rumor has it that he’s the prince.” She had an excited smile spread across her face. Her eyes were full of light and child like excitement.
“Oh, yes, I’m sure. The high and mighty prince Charmont comes to work on a lowly farm with no pay.
Hey, he might get paid!
Yeah,” I whispered, unconvinced.
“Well, I heard it from George who heard it from Lila, who heard it from Jasmine, who was outside of Jameson’s office when she overheard it.
Okay, great, but I couldn’t care less.
You are the only sixteen year old girl who isn’t fawning at the idea of him coming.
You’re right, Kate, I’m dreading it. Now if you’ll excuse me I have important things to do, like sleep.
Night Ann,” Kate grumbled.
“Night bestie.
Don’t call me that.
Can’t hear you I’m sleeping”
