It's about 4:20 when Mike comes down the stairs of our new place with his suitcase. I can't believe he's leaving me. He drops his bag and walks over to me, hugging me tightly. I can almost cry, but I won't let myself. "Hurry back," I say with my face buried in his chest.
"I will." He kisses me softly before we separate. He looks at his watch. "Okay, J is bringing me to the airport. He should be outside now." I grab him kissing him again."Text me every day," I demand.
"Yes ma'am." He nods. "Hey," He says and I look up at him. "I love you."
"I love you," I smile following him to the door. When I close it, I lean on it. He's going to be gone for 2 weeks. It might be shorter, or it might be longer. I hope it's shorter. I walk over to the new leather couch and sit down browsing the updates on my phone. Aw. The picture Mike posted of us got a bunch of likes. People are commenting saying that we're a beautiful couple and that their jealous. How cute.
As I look through my contacts, Henry's name pops up. I've got to give him a call and give him our new house number. I jump up to the counter and dial him. No answer. I leave a message. "Hi Henry, it's Charlie. I'm just calling to let you know that Mike and I moved together. To New York City and this is our new number. Give me a call when you get this. Love you dad." I sigh.
This is going to be a boring 2 weeks.I start back in the kitchen, placing the dishes in the cabinets. Then there's a knock at the front door. Who's that? I walk over to the door and open it. I'm greeted by Vance's friendly smile.
"Hey!" I open the door even wider, hugging him and inviting him in.
"What's up, what's going on?" He says with a smile, looking around the place. I close the door and lead him into the living room. He sits on the new chocolate leather couch. "Hey, you got anything to drink?" He asks.
Hmm. I walk over to the cabinets. I just unpacked some of Mike's good wine. I had no clue he even had this stuff. I grab a bottle of Yellow Tail Chardonnay.
He smiles as I walk over to the couch with two glasses. "Thank you so much for, you know, hooking us up with this place. It's incredible." I take a seat on the arm of the sofa on the other end.
"Anything for a friend." He sips. "So, what are you going to do with yourself without Mike? This nice place?" I squint looking up at the ceiling, really taking it to thought.
Hmm. "I have no idea," I finish what's in my glass, looking down at it. I'm not driving anywhere. How about another? I jump up to grab the bottle refilling my glass and adding a bit more to his. "I've got to do something though. Or else I'm going to drive myself crazy." I plop down beside him adjusting my shorts, pulling my t-shirt down. I must appear to be deep in thought, fingering through my hair.
"You could throw a party," He suggests. I look over at him quickly. I barely notice that I'm staring as I ponder his idea. I smile.
"That's an awesome idea." He laughs. "Yeah!" I'm obviously a little buzzed. "Yeah, lets get the word out, seriously!" He takes out his cell phone sending a mass text message.
"Done and done," He smirks at me. "Your welcome." He stares.
"Thank you, thanks, yeah." I can't stop smiling. "It's the liquor. I'm all woo. I'm a lightweight obviously." I chuckle loudly.
"I don't think I've ever seen you like this, I like it. It's like a breath of fresh air." He laughs.
"So how's Lily. Lily, and Eva, how are they?" I don't realize I'm being redundant.
"Good, great." I can't stop smiling and laughing at everything.
"Lily, she's something. Isn't she? She's like in love with you." I blurt out.
"What? Really?" He asks.
"Are you being sarcastic?" I can't stop laughing.
"I am actually. I know all about Lily. She can get pretty jealous." He finishes his glass. "As a matter of fact, she just asked me where I was and had a problem that I was alone with you. I mean, she didn't say much, but she sort of caught a little attitude." He leans forward, staring at me.
"Well, she has nothing to be jealous about. I have Michael." I smile pleasantly.
"And he's very lucky," He says confidently. "I might even be a little jealous of him."
I chuckle, standing up walking toward the kitchen. "Just a little?" I ask, my sarcasm evident. "Kidding!" I add, just in case he didn't catch it. He follows me into the kitchen. As I put away the bottle of wine, I feel him close behind me. Something inside me causes me to smirk.
"You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were coming on to me." I reply with my back still to him.
I glance down at the marble counter top, running my fingers along it.
"You're very clever." I turn around, now facing him. "But you see, I have a problem with touching things that don't belong to me." I stare into his blue eyes that almost mirror mine. This isn't right. He has to go.
"Vance, I think you should leave." I stare from his eyes to his lips. My minds telling me one thing, but my body's got a mind of it's own.
"Really," Were extremely close. "Because, you're hand seems to want me to stay." I look down at my right hand that's firmly gripped on his waist. What? I slowly draw my hand back to my side. But he only moves closer. He's staring down at my lips. I'm distracted from everything. Morals are a blur.
Ring! Ring!
I jump, turning my head. It's just the phone. I slide from underneath him to answer it. "Hello?" My tone breathy.
"Charlie! It's Henry. I got your message. You moved!" It takes me a second to gather my thoughts.
"Yes, yes I did. With Mike." I glance over at Vance who's staring at me.
"That's great. I'll save your number. Is this the home number?"
"Yes."
"Okay great. I hope to hear from you soon." He says. I smile.
"You will."
"Bye dad." I hang up, looking over where Vance once stood. Where did he go? I wonder. My phone vibrates on the counter. It's a text message, from him.
