Just another day

The streets of LA were always busy and exciting, which is exactly why the young and ambitious James Martinez transferred there! His old small town of 500 people didn't really have much going on for him other than the occasional drug deal gone wrong in the back of someone's pickup or a tractor broken down in the highway blocking traffic.
Being a Highway Patrolman in Los Angeles was much more his speed! Car chases! Murders! Bank robs! It made him feel like the enchanting superhero's he read about when he was younger, the ones that inspired him to become the hopeful officer he was!

He loved driving around, getting to know the locals of his new area he was going to patrol, the lady at the coffee shop who always seemed to adore him, she was very nice, he knew she liked him but for now he wanted to focus on his work, as it was his life, and he was more than accepting of that! It was barely 1 pm and he already wrote up 6 speeding tickets, and investigated an animal cruelty scene, which broke his heart since it involved his favorite animals, poor little kittens starving out in the rain after a horrible man abandoned them there. He already had two cats at home or else he'd gladly volunteer to take them under his wing so to speak....

He was very passionate about his animals indeed, he loved them with all his heart, even having framed pictures of them on his desk at the station, his youngest was a 2 year old cat named Dixie, she was a gorgeous long haired she-cat who donned a bright purple collar with a jingle bell, his oldest and second cat was a 5 year old orange Tom properly named Goose, after his favorite fictional cat in a super hero comic, Captain Marvel. He always wore around a pastel blue collar with a little blue bow tie in the front. Each of them had tiny fish shaped metal tags sporting their name on one side and Officer James' name as well as phone number on the other. They always seemed to get along well, he found Dixie while on his way to work one day, she was in the middle of a busy roadway that was (at the time) undergoing construction, and under the protection of his badge James proceeded to block traffic and run out to scoop up the small gray ball of fluff that clutched to him for the remainder of his shift. He planned on taking her to the shelter after work but throughout the day with her he became attached. Even stopping at his favorite coffee shop with her in hand to get the small kitten a tiny dish of milk to lap up as he had his afternoon coffee.

After that day she was glued to his side. Dixie loved adventure, and sometimes James will still grant her a ride to work with him. Goose on the other hand was a problem child. When he first moved to LA he knew he wanted a companion, and what better company than that of a cat! He walked into the local shelter asking for the cat who had been there the longest. And the man working the front desk quickly showed him back to a cage with a large orange cat curled into a ball, and as the door opened an angry face rose from the tunnel of fur and let out an angry growl.
"He doesn't let anyone handle him, we have to sedate him to administer vaccines and to check on him".

James heart immediately knew he needed this cat, to give him a second chance, he knew he wasn't mean, he only needed to be shown love.
And after every day visits for weeks the orange cat slowly began to trust him.
Gooses first day home was a shock but after about a week the cat seemed to fit right in, and he was a very good brother to Dixie when she was first introduced into their family.

And James was content with that! He loved his little family, it was perfect just the way it was. Even though he knew his job was dangerous, and he could be killed at any given time. He trusted himself.

Just as he was about to take a drink from his water bottle his radio screamed in his ear.
"We have a 10-95 south bound on placer street"

He stood and jogged swiftly to his car, opening the door and placing his key in the ignition, he was envious of the officers that drove higher performance cars, his classic CHP SUV was plain compared to the Chargers the other officers drove, but those were only granted to the senior officers, two more years and that would be him! He loved his car but James couldn't wait to be driving something more high end.

He sped Down the streets, running red lights and stopping traffic in its tracks, his sirens wailing and donning the glimmer of red and blue on the sides of vehicles he passed. This was his favorite thing, driving as fast as he could to the scene! Having every driver on the road respecting him and gladly moving aside to let him through to do his job.

Once he arrived he could see it was a busted Race scene, the temporary track cones set up on an old abandoned runway to an airport that had been shut down years ago, Grass poking up  in between cracks in the black top.

The door opened and he approached two of his fellow officers, Ramirez and Bradly,
"Late to the scene again eh Martinez?" Bradley joked, bouncing his shoulders as he laughed. Ramirez, being the smallest of the two men standing there stood quietly as he waited for their senior officer to arrive.
An older man with soft gray hair approached and they all fell quiet, "anything to report gentlemen?" He spoke, deep and gentle, this was officer Perkins, he was the oldest at their station and the most respected among the Highway patrolmen of their area, plus he was nice so no need to worry about a dick boss.

Ramirez cleared his throat
"We busted an illegal street race scene sir, there were 24 drivers, all of them headed out minutes before we arrived, we believe they had radio surveillance sir"
"These damn kids" Perkins spoke up, pinching the bridge of his nose and sighing, "I don't know what it is with them lately, this is the fourth one this month".
All of them nodded in agreement before signing up the final paperwork and returning to their work.

James got home late that night, stretching out on his couch, cracking his ankles and toes as both of his loving felines curled into his side, watching their favorite nighttime show, before heading to bed.

The fluffy beings followed him gladly to his bedroom, as he dressed down to his boxers and placed on blue plaid pajama pants, leaving his shirt folded neatly on his dresser.
With a yawn he turned the light off and pulled his cats close, ending his busy day in the best way possible
