covens from all over the world had decided that the cadwell's reign of terror had to come to an end, so they gathered the chaos practitioners and slaughtered them on sight. the few that had managed to escape the initial killing were burned at the stake at high noon. cordelia cadwell, coraline's great-grandmother, hid herself and her son in the back of a wagon and took off the moment she heard the screaming begin.
the last surviving members of the cadwell family travelled to america after the attack, and they remained in hiding for over a century. three generations later coraline was born, her mother had taken off a few hours after giving birth and her father was left to take care of the child by himself. it was in that moment, the moment when her looked in his daughters vibrant green eyes, that he swore to never let anything happen to her; and he took that promise to the grave. markus cadwell did everything in his power (which was literally everything) to make sure that if something happened to him, his only daughter would be in good hands.
when coraline was five, markus met a man by the name alaric saltzman, who became his best friend. so when coraline was sixteen and her father passed away, alaric saltzman did not hesitate to take in the girl his closest friend had left in his care.
