"Backs against the wall"

Rain poured from overhead, hitting the sidewalks and pavement in continuous assault. I looked above to the dark grey massive sky. The storm clouds still moving in toward us not promising any let up anytime soon.

"Roxie! Wouldja get a load of this rain!" Vanessa yelled through the air as we stood in the middle of intersection G St. NW and 12th St. NW.

"It rocks yeah!? This is so badass. I'm gonna snap a pic real quick! Cover my ehrr... everything?" She flashed me a crooked smile.

I looked in her direction giving her the disapproving parentalesque side-eye that she has grown accustomed to since we partnered up four months ago. The division did well by pairing us. She is an excellent shot and has this care-free bubbly spirit that you don't see around here too often. She reminds me so much of Analise...

Vanessa chose to ignore my blatant opposition to her current shenanigans and began shuffling through her backpack in search of her cam.

"Nessy. You're going to have a wading pool for a backpack if you don't zip that thing up." I watched as she continued to pull things out in her hectic search.

I swear this girl's priorities are in a constant disarray. I have yet to see her move with this much purpose, especially in the mornings when we really need to make it to first breakfast before all the eggs and bacon are gone.

"BOOM"

The thunderclap sounded off, followed by a flashing light echoing across the sky.

My mind shifted to full-alert in chain reaction, lifting my T821 with glow sights aiming in anticipation of Hyena stragglers around us. I deployed Titan, my turret for more coverage.

"Clear." I voiced to Nessy over my shoulder.

My eyes continued to peer steadily though the onslaught of rain. It thudded against my equipment and soaked my clothes. I typically don't care for being drenched in clothes, but the cool sensation on my skin is a much-needed vacation from the long hot summer patrols through the streets of DC.

"Almoooost got it...." Nessy managed to squeeze out the words as she continued to rummage with whole arm inserted in her pack at this point.

"Vanessa.." I added firmness to my voice as I pronounced every syllable in her name to portray the serious nature of the situation at hand. Like that would help.

She jumped to her feet, holding the camera in the air like rare loot. "Got it"! She exclaimed in her shrilly exuberant voice.

"Okay you got it. Now can we get out of here before we're gunned down in this mess"?

We had just finished a 14-hour long infiltration/rescue mission and had been heading back to the B.O.O(Base Of Operations) when the storm clouds started rolling in. The image of my bunk highlighted in a golden aura at the forefront of my brain was already more than enough motivation to move post-haste.

Vanessa looked at me with a glint in her eye and a cocky smirk. "I'd like to see em try Rocks" she said in her smugness and gave me a playful wink. I fought back a smile.

"Okay come take this selfie with me."

"You should salute and look all serious-like, you know, like how you always do... and..."

Interrupting her before she could carry on, I threw my arm around her shoulder and wiped the rain from my eyes. We were cheek to cheek. She stuck her tongue out and squinted her eyes as she lifted the cam. I let my smirk spread from the corners of my mouth.

"1.2.3..."

The camera flashed, and she giggled all giddy to have a new photo to pin to her corkboard back at the bunker titled "The Badass Chronicles". I looked at her happiness and forgot where we were and what had transpired in the last 18 hours. Watching her laugh and smile in the rain at her handiwork was a moment worth slowing down for. The moment immediately evaporated and my image of her dispersed at the alarming sound coming from Titan.

"beep beep beep beep beep" My turret's line of sight alerted us to movement within the detection radius. It started firing at various targets in the blurry darkness. I propelled my drone to support the turret, while we scurried to cover behind an abandoned mover's truck. I closed my eyes, back planted firmly against the side of the truck, and loaded a full SMG clip.

"I hate these Division assholes!" The foreign voice of a Hyena shouted out from cover that Titan had him suppressed behind. Nessy secured her backpack and readied her Marksman rifle. She stuck her head out around the van to get eyes on the Hyena.

"Oh yeah!? Well we hate you Hyena assholes even more!" She ducked back in cover and tried to catch her breath, then gave me a reassuring wink. The rain continued to pour. The sound of the rain mixed with the thunder, and the spray of bullets matched my heart rate as I prepared myself for more death.
