Keep quiet when they tell you too
"Alright, bye then!" I texted, hit the send and threw the phone across the bed. Oh he ain't playing games with this girl! Frustration led me to throw one of my pillows across the room and it hit the window straight and landed on the table, which had my books and a lamp on it. Grief and disappointment slowly took the place of frustration and I buried my head in one of the other pillows and let out a sob. The pillow got wet slowly with my tears. Anger took sorrow's place, leading me to tear the pillow apart and make my bed a feathery mess.
My emotions were a jumble at that point. I wiped my tears and thought, no more crying for that idiot. I finally settled on going for a walk. Yeah, I thought, that always helped. I checked the time. It was 2:48 in the morning.
Eh, I thought, that's better, no one to see me walk out on my problems.
As the misty cold night air hit my body, it sent shivers through my whole body. I zipped up my hoodie and buried my hands deeper into the pockets and walked, kicking small stones and humming to myself, I reached the far end of the street.
I lived in a small town, where 10:30 pm meant midnight to people. The area was a quiet one, with more trees than houses. That's why it wasn't so bad living here alone. As I walked through the night, the area was vacant, as usual. All lights in the houses switched off, and only one street lamp flickering, the lane seemed darker than usual.
I was looking down at the stone being kicked around and the owl hooting was the only music to my disturbed soul. A pitch dark road lay ahead of me, as I turned to go back at the end of the road. The light flickering had gone out too.
A loud shriek of a woman from behind stunned my ears. As I turned back as a reflex, a heavy mass fell on me just at that moment and pushed me into the bushes behind me, twigs and leaves cutting into my skin and the weight, pressing down on my stomach.
It all went dark and my body felt weightless for a moment as if I was falling down a deep dark hole.
The street lights flickered back on. There was no lady, nothing on my body but I lay on the bushes. It took me a few minutes to get my body working again. I gathered up all the strength I could and got up. I hurried homeward, my thoughts racing with my heartbeat.
That was so strange, I thought, what even was that?
My hands and legs were trembling and by the time I had stepped on my front porch, I was sweating profusely. I fumbled with the lock on the door. The cuts on my face stung and I could feel blood tricking down from the wound on my knee. I somehow managed to pry the door open and shut it again, behind me, securely.
Water...I need water, I thought.
I went to the kitchen and as I had somehow managed to calm myself down and was gulping down my second glass of water, I heard a loud thud in my bedroom upstairs, which almost shook the whole house. The glass fell from my hands and shivers ran down my spine. Tremors seized me.
I rushed upstairs to inspect what had happened to find my table upturned and its contents scattered on the floor, among several of my clothes. But the closet was closed. The scene made my mind freeze.
"What is happening?" I screamed. Panic seized me.
I frantically looked around to find a source which could have caused this. A small part of my mind thought, burglars? Probably..., while the logical part reasoned that no human alone could be capable of upturning this ancient, heavy table all by themselves. I tried to get out of the room but tripped over something and fell face flat on the ground.
