"Eli get up! It's time to go!"
I wake up to the sound of my mom pounding my door as if she was the police.
"Five minutes please!" I beg groggily without ever opening my eyes.
"Get up now or I'll take away your phone privileges young lady!" Shouts mom from the other side of the lock door.
Opening my eyes slowly I glance at my clock which reads 7:15. I'm late. Sitting up and rubbing the sleep out of my eyes I glance around my room. Reaching for my lamp because of course I have the darkest room in our apartment, with the view of a brick wall. Yes I said it a brick wall. My room faces the alley that runs along the side of our building. Pulling on the first clothes I see in my closet I grab my backpack with a grunt and stumble out of my room. I can all ready here Karter and Alec arguing over what channel we are watching on the small tv that is in our breakfast nook.
"Jeez. Can't you dorks not argue for more than two seconds!" I ask them. I'm am replied with two pink tongues.
"Come on Eli eat breakfast and get going the bus will be here in five minutes" says mom who is running frantically about trying to get her and the boy's things together. "Okay. Karter you and Alec are going home with Jacob so you can work on your history project, then I'll pick you up so you guys can go to soccer practice. Elizabeth, you have band after school and then after that your going home with Danielle so you can get some homework done. Got it team?!"
Mom constantly calls us a team because she used to play basketball in collage till she blew her knee out. Then I was born and dad left and it all went downhill from there. Mom always says it's not Dads fault he had to leave. She still loves him that's why she never ever dated anyone else for the longest time. It hurt her when he left, but she said he wasn't allowed to stay whatever that means. Then she started to date Mario, the twins dad. They were lovebirds, but he wasn't always responsible. When he found out mom was pregnant he just felt he wasn't ready to be a dad, and he left. He still sends her child care checks to help pay for medical bills and stuff, but that's not always enough. She wasn't too heartbroken though. She still wasn't over my dad, and was almost glad Mario left.
After Kissing mom on the cheek I grab a granola bar and an apple and walk down the hall to "shoe station". Sitting down on the little white benches in "shoe station" to the door I pull on my trusty navy blue converse, glance in the full length mirror right across from me. I am pretty average when it comes to looks.
Running a hand through my messy mousy dull blonde hair to tame the knots I survey my appearance with an uneasy glance. In my wrinkled grey T-shirt and my to skinny red jeans I am quite the sight. I look at my eyes to see if there a bags under them. Sure enough there are. My Hazel-green eyes rimmed with black lashes that some girls would kill for are easily my best quality. Breaking contact with the mirror I grab my too full jansport backpack, my green rain jacket, and my breakfast. I hop out the door with a hurried goodbye. Better to be out of the shoe area before the twins of terror come through.
Walking the two blocks to Main Street I glance around at all the little shops and houses. My neighbor hood is small and cheep so most of the houses, shops, and buildings are a little run down. Standing at the corner of the street I notice that the bus is already there.
"Wait for me! Wait for meeeee!" I shout at the driver. Running across the street waving and waving my arms wildly I barely have time to jump on the lowest step in the door way.
"I could neva eva leeve without'cha honey!" Drawled Mary Jane, our southern bus driver.
"Thanks MJ. I over slept again." I say to her as I swop my magnetic bus card through the reader. Sitting in the seat right behind the drivers seat I brace my self for the lurching of the moving bus. Hey I never said Mary Jane was good driver. Dropping my backpack from my shoulder, that aches now from the weight of the thing, I glance at the people on the bus.
"Next stop St. Augustine's Plaza." Says the automated voice. One lurching stop later and a face full of the back of the drivers seat other people start climbing on. I can name most of the people who get on. Crazy hat, bag man, the joggers. They all board with the smoothness of having done this process many times. Right as the door starts closing a boy about my age climbs onto the bus. He's skinny and has orange-brown hair that falls in his face. He's kinda cute I guess but he has a smile that would make all of my teachers instantly mark him as a trouble maker. I glance at him through my lashes as to not get noticed. He looks at the people on the bus once and then his eyes land on me. Walking down the isle to my seat. I move my backpack to the floor to make room for him. He sat down next to me and just pulled out a comic book.
"So you like The Fantastic Four huh." I said it before I could stop my self.
"Yea. Ben is my favorite." He replied with a small smile.
"Personally I like Ried the best. I have a whole comic book collection at home."
"I'll have to look at them sometime then." Why did I get the feeling that he might try to steal a few.
"Maybe not, but okay." Okay Eli ask him what his name is. Don't be shy. I tug at the neckless that hangs around my neck. It's a shoe with wings. Mom always said dad gave it to me when I was little so when I grew up I could remember him by it. I still wear it everyday. Ok. Here goes. "Hey. What's your name?"
"Will. Well, it's really William but I prefer Will."
The bus lurches to a stop and I fall right into Will. I mutter a sorry under my breath. My cheeks flush red. He Laughs and helps me up. I grab my backpack to go. We're at school now. I hadn't heard the stop notification. I get up and Will follows me out the door.
"You go to this school?" I ask Will.
"Well for the time being, yes." I wonder what that means?
He then goes to the office and jog towards the zoo know as Horizon Middle School.
