A game like life or a world where people have the ability to use powers and get stronger by increasing their soul/abilities or growing their soul seed(s)/soul sea(s). Either from the time they are born or until they reach an awakening age are they able to grow and become more powerful.
By killing, devouring, absorbing, refining and training.
Controlling what you want to level up or get stronger. Physical resistance, physical endurance, speed, intellect, wisdom, strength, spirit, beasts, magic.
Magic?
Going to school based on your innate ability or from who you know. Learning the different classes and if you can or cannot move up the chain. What kind of soul levels there are and how strong they may be.
Going out into the wild to train or discover old ruins. Finding places that will take you to new worlds with similar rules but different beings or enhanced beings.
Meeting people you can trust or saving people who then follow you and treat you like their boss or family. Being able to help each other advance forward well beyond the age limits and speed that has been the normal since the beginning.
Romance? - Some mortal realms still have ceremonies such as marriage when people do not focus on cultivating and becoming immortal. Otherwise cultivators will agree to become life companions or eternal companions which are much more stable bonds than those of mortals.
Action, fantasy, spiritual/martial arts
Teachers could possible have more animal style names. Live in a kingdom style city with a lord and a council of elders.

Typically people believe that who ever kills a demon or beast is the one who receives the soul attached to it but that isn't always the case. Even if the strongest person doesn't give the killing blow they will still receive the soul. The strongest fighter might not have the strongest soul power. If the beast that was defeated was a high level or intelligent the soul will go to the most powerful attacker available.
