Setting-

It was too late, all done. Livia was trembling, staring at her husband through the lenses of her tears. She could not find any comfort or solace in the expression of his face, he was not joking. He was serious and it was too late.
She has always been a perfectionist, always cautious, making sure she never made mistakes in anything she did. She should have been more careful, she blamed herself. After thirty years of being perfect, she had finally made her first mistake, and, she knew it would cost her everything.
Ever since she had met him that Sunday in the library, three years back, it was all she wanted; to have him, sleep with him, wake up next to him every morning, forever. With tears streaming down her face she laughed at that last word. She has gotten all she wanted except that last word. The irony. Her dreams had come true for one night. The most important night of her life, her wedding night.
There was no way she could go back now, the seed had already been planted. Livia felt cold and dizzy and then, she heard the sound of her hipbones crack.
Yet, she could not move, and the Gods would not give her the luxury of passing out. She was made to feel every bit of it, slow-torturing her with the pain of her organs bursting and bones cracking, it was her suffering that gave It strength.
The husband stared at her impassively. Did she meant nothing at all to him? Were the last three years just an act to lure her towards this gruesome ritual? It was, it had always been a lie, she realized, he was just doing his duty, she was just an object. The object that would give birth to the next tree man, the child that would grow out of his mother's body, making her forever a part of the forest.
There were no tears now, she was bleeding from her eyes, her ears, nose and mouth. Her vagina. She could not see her husband's face anymore, nor could she hear or sense anything, except the pain. Her mouth was a waterfall, vomiting out all the insides of her body.
And then she knew. It was just one more moment. She was grievous and terrified, but at that last moment she never regretted loving him, or being with him. No matter how he used and destroyed her, he was the love of her life. He will always be , Livia thought, as her body burst into a sprinkle of red as the plant emerged and grew visible from her remains and came forward to greet its father.
