What would you give your life, a happy ending or a heart-rending full stop ?
If you think your parents or your best friends will decide what to do, then you're wrong. Its only you who can choose what is right or what is wrong because I'm sure you don't want to end your life with "What If ? "
Senior Year.
Kristin walked down the hallway everyday knowing that when she'll reach her locker , she'll see him once again. A simple glance will turn into a stare.
It was just another regular day. Evan was, like always, standing near her locker. No camera could have captured the look in her eyes and the beating of her heart when she looked at him. But there was something that was killing her inside. She was his best friend and she knew he would never consider her anything more than that and it was hard getting through it.
Evan was waiting for her, ready with another football game story which Kristin knew would be boring but was still ready to listen to every word he said. She looked at him, in the way no one else would. He was talking, absentmindedly making her weak.
She wondered. " Is this the right moment ? Should I tell him how I feel ? " She took a deep breath, but then thought, "I cannot risk our friendship. I still have these simple moments with him, even if it means being just a friend, I should leave words unspoken." And so she did.
5 Years later.
Both of them were sitting in Kristin's backyard. Evan had a terrible fight with his father. He said, " I would've not expected anybody else's shoulder at this hour of night. Thanks for being there for me." Kristin replied smiling, " You know I'll be there forever. Till the end. You can always count on me. " Evan smiled and sipped a little bit of this coffee. Kristin thought, " It's the right time. I'd tell him everything. " She said to him, " I want to t... " But before she could complete, he said, " You know you're the bestest friend I could ever have, right ?" These two simple words, 'best friend' shattered her into pieces. She couldn't do anything but smile and nod.
6 Years later.
It was Evan's wedding. Kristin entered the church, wearing this very beautiful dress, with her husband. Evan looked happy and so did Kristin. She knew it was right for him. The preacher said, " Speak now or forever hold your peace. " Kristin wanted to stand up and confess what she'd been hiding for years. Yeah, she still loved him with all her heart. But then she looked at Evan. He was happy. She could tell how much he loved his bride and so, she kept it to herself .
Days, months, years passed. Kristin had her own family and so did Evan. They hadn't spoken for years but there was not even a single day when Evan's memories didn't haunt Kristin but there was nothing she could do to bring him back to her.
20 Years later.
Kristin walked out of her house to check her mail box. She was 65 but still looked beautiful as before. She read the address on one of the letters in her hand. It looked familiar. She realized it was Evan's address. A wide smile was drawn on her face. She opened it without wasting any time. She read it and suddenly her heart sank, her entire world fell apart. Evan died. Her best friend, her first love died.
She sat there in his funeral. She was inconsolable. She was broken. She could never tell him how much she loved him and how much he meant to her. Evan's old friend came up to her and said, " Evan wanted to see you for the last time but I guess it was too late and so he left you this letter. " She took the letter, opened it slowly. It read:
" Dear Kristin,
I'd no longer be with you when you get this letter. There is something I wanted to tell you from a very long time. I guess from our school days. There was always this something about you that made me weak every time I looked at you. There was something about your smile and the way you talked to me. I loved spending time with you and then I realized, I had fallen in love with my best friend. I had fallen in love with you." Tears wet the paper. Kristin continued reading. " I know you never felt the same way and you always considered me as just a friend and so I never told you. I didn't want to risk our friendship. I wanted to live those simple moments with you, even if it meant being just a friend. I left words unspoken. You were the best thing that ever happened to me.
From, Evan.
P.S. I will love you till my last breath.
She dropped the letter. She sat there with tears in her eyes and regret in her heart. Their life would have been different if they confessed their love for each other. Maybe, together.
There are going to be times in your life when you don't know which path to choose, where to lead your life. You'd definitely feel that you need someone else to pull you back to the right place but in reality, it you and only you who can take the right decision. But if you'll let someone else deal with your life, then all you'll be left with will be, 'What if ?'
"What if I took that one chance I had?". " What if it gave me all I ever wanted ? "
Don't let these two simple words haunt you for your entire life. So, take chance, don't be afraid, tell people you love them, apologize for your mistakes, confess the truth if you ever lied and thank people if they've been nice to you. Don't live your life with the feeling of regret. Make the ride worth while.
