Chapter Four:
I grinned eagerly at Marilynne, breathing at a point almost to hyperventilation but not at all out of breath.
"Ready?" I whispered to her even though if she wasn't ready it wouldn't have mattered. But she nodded and we pressed toward the front of the elevator a little bit harder. Suddenly, the elevator jolted and dropped us. I let out an involuntary shriek before realizing the elevator was rising again. It jolted to stop, making us fall onto each other. I muttered an apology to the little girl I crushed just as the elevator doors opened. Revealed to us was a pitch black room and, the dimly lit lights in the elevator went out. I strained my eye futilely, trying to get a glimpse of the room we had to enter. The people surrounding me seemed to gasp almost at exact same time.
"Here are the rules!" A high-pitched but so obviously masculine voice exploded out of nowhere. "We're playing a game! You have to run and, if you fall behind, we'll come and tag you! Ready?"
I held tight onto whoever was in front of me's jacket.
"Set?"
"Rachel?" Marilynne. I released the jacket in exchange for gripping her arm hard, gripped with terror and wondering if I should smile in anticipation or scream in terror.
"G- Oh, wait. No, I'm just screwing with you. Go." And we went. White lights flashed randomly, highlighting the gray walls and 'blood,' splattered upon them. I tried to hang onto Mar but the running mass of people forced us apart. There was a hallway we were heading toward but the irritating lights didn't let me see much of it. Finally, I made it into the hallway. The white flashes allowed me to see the cages aligned on each side of the hallway. The things in the cages, well, that was a mystery. Everyone filed into the hallway and the door slammed shut behind us. The lights to the first cages on my left and right clicked on. The obviously fake zombies glared at us from behind they're bars and some even reached out to us as we hesitantly brushed past them. The hallway was too narrow for all of us to not risk brushing against a zombie arm and Mar, apparently being one of those people, shrieked, "Don't fucking touch me!"
The group noticeably jumped at this and she blushed. I walked back toward her. "This is fun!"
She glared at me and we debated on the 'fun' level of this while other lights clicked on to show more zombies and other gross things. Finally, we reached the end of the hallway where the last cage lights clicked on, showing that the hallway was a dead end. The was a bookcase piled high with books on the wall.
"Bet you someone's going to come out of there," Mar and I said to each other at the same time. Sure enough, the bookcase opened and a middle-aged guy came out. His skin was tinted green and he had hair everywhere, giving him a werewolf-like appearance that was surprisingly realistic.
He gave some bullshit speech about the supernatural and warned us about going through the bookcase. Well, he could go fuck himself. He offered us two options: Go with him to find a way out or go down the hallway.
"Hallway?" Mar whispered to me as everyone paused to think about their decision. I nodded eagerly even every single one of the group went with the werewolf. These assholes need to live a little. Mar looked more indecisive as the werewolf group disappeared down a hidden passage found by moving a brick in the wall.
The bookcase creaked open eerily, and exchanged fortifying glance, Mar and I stepped into yet another dimly lit hallway. at the end of the hallway was a dead end. What. The. Fuck?
At least they didn't close the door behind us. I whirled around to get the fuck out of there because it reminded me a little bit too much of 'sexy time,' and Harry Potter. "Marilynne!"
She whirled around, too. Standing in the doorway was a clown, all freaky-like and running makeup. Suddenly, what he was holding in his hands revved. I don't know if you noticed but leaf blowers weren't supposed to rev like that. Like... A chainsaw? The clown stepped closer, and the... Shit. It was a chainsaw. We were so screwed.
Mar and I turned tail and ran down the hallway. Well, I did. Marilynne stopped after only a few steps. "Wait! I dropped my shoe!"
This bitch. Even so, I paused as she went back for it. The clown was taking his sweet time walking toward us, ambling over as though he hadn't a care in the world. Except, maybe, chopping innocent school girls to pieces. Yeah, there was always that.
Mar grabbed her shoe and then we booked to the end of the hallway.
"I don't wanna die!" Marilynne screamed stereotypically. She raised a hand to bang on the wall and... Fell through it? Hot damn! The wall wasn't a wall at all. I moved the curtain aside cautiously because, if they sent clowns after us, only God knows what they could throw at us next.
But on the other side was a simple walkway that lead to the outside world. A bored, mechanical voice spoke from hidden speakers. "Thanks for choosing Jim's Hauntingly Haunted House and have a scary day!"
Marilynne and I gushed at how amazing that was while glancing behind us to make sure the clown hadn't followed us. We walked out to where we parked Mar's blue Mini Cooper and decided to go get pumpkins for Halloween.
