She peered through the window down at the children in the street and brought her phone to her ear. "C'mon Smithy, pick up. I need to talk to you." Enigma whispered. "You have reached Matthew Smith, or my friends call me Smithy, but leave a message and I'll get back to you." Enigma sighed and got off the window sill. She looked around her room and put her phone down on her desk. The room was in the attic and had two windows. One facing the North and one facing the East. Her bed was on the South side of the room and had multitudes of pillows on it. Her desk and dresser were both on the West side.
She opened the North window and hopped out onto the tree limb that was so dangerously close to snapping. As she climbed down the tree, a voice spoke out. "E, you shouldn't do that anymore." She slipped and a pair of arms caught her. "Smithy, what are you doing here? I tried calling you, but you didn't answer." Enigma said, flustered. "Yeah, look, I'm sorry about that. I was.....somewhere doing.......things." replied Matthew. Enigma looked at him with disbelief and started to walk to the woods behind her house. Matthew followed close behind and they soon got to the edge of the woods.
As soon as they got to the edge, Enigma stopped in her tracks. "Smithy? Do you hear that?" She turned to him and Matthew shook his head. "E, why did you want to call me?" He tried to take her mind off of what she heard. She turned to him and said "Because you're the only friend I've got. No one ever wants to talk to me, not even my relatives." Her eyes started to tear up and then they heard a gunshot. Enigma looked down at her stomach and started to cough up blood. "Enigma! Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit!" Matthew yelled. "C'mon, E, stay with me." He was starting to panic as she blacked out. He grabbed his phone out of his pocket and called 911.
That was a year ago.
She stood under the tree in her yard, scrolling through her phone, waiting for Matthew to come and get her. The sky was a dark gray, threatening to rain. Enigma looked up from her phone and sighed. 'Great. Just what I need.' Her phone began to buzz and she answered it. "Where the fuck are you, Smithy?" She practically yelled into her phone. "Calm your tits, I'm almost there. Let's say, five minutes?" Matthew spoke. "If you're not here by the time I'm done climbing the tree, you're going to have a fucking problem." She sounded very stressed about something, but Matthew couldn't put his finger on it. "I'll meet you by the lantern on the old road where we first met. OK?" Matthew sounded very cautious about what he said as to not anger Enigma anymore. "Fine. I'll see you in ten." She replied.
When she started walking down the street, her eyes fell upon a small bull terrier. It looked at her with sad eyes and wobbled towards her. She bent down and picked it up. It barked as she looked into its eyes and she held it up to her face. "I'm gonna name you Scampers." It barked and wagged its tail. Enigma carried it towards the old road where she was supposed to meet Matthew. "Who's the little one you brought with?" Enigma looked up and saw Matthew. "His names Scampers. Would you like to meet him?" Matthew walked over to Enigma and looked at Scampers. "How are you doing, little guy?" His voice was one that people used to speak to a baby. Scampers barked in response and started to like his face. "He likes you, Smithy." Enigma looked at Matthew and laughed. Slobber and drool were covering his face. He wiped it off with his sleeve and motioned Enigma to get into the car. "Oh, right." She hopped into the car and they drove to a forest. The same forest where they met each other.
