"What do we have?!" Sanem asked the nurse as they were walking towards the ER.
"He's a 30-year-old male, who just had a heart attack, and his brother called 911."
"Ok, let's see what we can do for him." She spoke as she opened the room door and saw Can in the hospital bed unconscious, with an oxygen mask on and an EKG on. Sanem froze but snapped out of it quickly, and she walked towards him. "Talk to me? What has happened till now?"
"We have shocked him twice and given him 2ml of Epinephrine, and now he is stable."
"Ok, let's get him to the ICU, and we will go forward from there. Has anyone checked his wallet? He is a patient of mine but, I don't remember his last name," she said, trying to keep herself together.
"No." A nurse answered, "His abi (brother) came with him in the ambulance and gave us all the information we needed."
"It's ok. Either way, I'm going to check it," Sanem wanted to make sure it wasn't there, even though she told him to get rid of it, he never confirmed those words for her. She grabbed the bag with the belongings that were taken off him, when he was brought in. She looked for his wallet, took his ID out just to pretend she was looking for it, but that's when she saw it. She quickly grabbed it and put it in her pocket before anyone else could see. She walked to the nurse who had his chart and compared names. Then she put the ID back in his wallet and returned everything to place. The entire time, with a broken heart and holding her tears in.
"Ok, then let's transfer him upstairs, and I'll take over," Sanem told the ER doctors. "Until then, I'll go and talk to the family." Sanem came out and saw Emre, Aziz, and Mihriban, sitting in the waiting room. "Sanem, sweetheart, how is he?" Mihriban asked in tears.
"He's stable. They are transferring him to the ICU as we speak."
"Are you going to treat him?" Aziz asked.
"I shouldn't, but I will. I have been Can's cardiologist for the past year and a half, and I know his history better than anyone here, so I will treat him. Though I am asking everyone to be careful when we speak because no one must know Can and I are together. Or else I won't be able to help him, and there's a possible chance that I might lose my job."
"Don't worry, we won't tell," Aziz assured her.
They all noticed Sanem was different. Her body language had changed. She was concerned, but there was something else too. "Sanem, are you sure everything is ok?" Emre asked.
"Yeah, everything is ok. But when you see Can, please give this to him." She took out his DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) from her pocket and handed it to Emre. "Tell him that I found it in his wallet and that he should be thankful it was me, or else they would've never resuscitated him." Sanem wiped her tears.
Emre took it from her hand and saw what she had given him, "Sanem, he must have," he started to explain but was cut off.
"Emre, don't. This is just proof that I'm not good enough. But, that's a conversation that he and I will have another day."
