Chrysanthemum sat quietly in the passenger seat of her Aunt's car. She bobbed her head along to the beat of Mariah Carey's music which blared through the radio. They passed large buildings and lots of restaurants. Chrysanthemum studied the small town as it flew passed her window. Her Aunt, Ann, turned down the radio a bit and glanced at her niece.
"So, what do you think so far?" She asked. The teen turned her head toward Ann and shrugged her shoulders.
"It looks like a normal town. I'm not really expecting anything grand," She said with a small laugh. When her mother told her that she was going to stay with Aunt Ann, Chrysanthemum didn't know how to react. She loved her Aunt but she didn't want to move away from her friends.
"Well, I hope you're not too tired because I was hoping to take you out to brunch!" Ann exclaimed as she squeezed her steering wheel. Ann had hoped to introduce Chrysanthemum at the Galentines Day brunch that Leslie was throwing. She didn't want to miss it, however, she knew her niece wasn't the most social. Chrysanthemum squinted at her Aunt, suspicious of this brunch that she was so keen on going to.
"I would have to change..." The girl trailed off and looked down at her airplane outfit: a grey sweatshirt and black sweatpants. Ann hummed in agreement as she pulled into the driveway. "But I guess I am a bit hungry," Chrysanthemum finished.
{"Yeah I guess it's a big change. But Aunt Ann is great and I don't think anything that happens here could surprise me. I mean, I've lived in Chicago my whole life! What could be so bad about this place?"}
"Well, here's your suitcase and your room is right down that hall. Go get changed and we'll head out in a bit." Ann told Chrysanthemum as she ushered her into the house.
{"I'm excited to have Chrysanthemum living here. And I know everyone else will like her, she's great! I just hope that she won't be scared off by everyone's...intensity."}
Chrysanthemum lugged her suitcase into her room and let it fall to the floor. She took a moment to look around the room before unzipping her case and digging through it. Furrowing her eyebrows, she started to pull clothes out and throw them over her shoulder. Finally, she found something decent to wear.
The outfit wasn't fancy, but it would have to do. She got dressed and shoved her shoes on before leaving the room. She wondered the hall, looking for the bathroom and found it a door down from her own room. She looked in the mirror and cringed at how frizzy her hair was. She took her wavy-curls out of the bun and tried to redo it. As she wrapped the hair tie a third time, it snapped in her hands. Chrysanthemum stood still for a moment and let her eyes slide toward the camera that was watching her from around the corner. She sighed and threw the broken tie away as she decided to leave her hair down. It didn't look too bad.
"Are you ready, Chrys?" Ann called from the living room.
"Yeah!" Chrysanthemum called as she emerged from the hallway. She noticed that Ann had changed as well, into something a bit nicer than she expected. "Am I dressed okay?" Chrys asked her Aunt, suddenly feeling nervous about the outfit she chose. Ann looked up from her phone and looked at her niece.
