A boy sits at a window on a beautiful ship, the best he'd ever seen. They'd boarded only just this morning. The ocean waves stretch and contract on a pristine blue surface. He squints with the blinding light reflecting off the sea. He hadn't seen a blue expanse like this in years, the memories almost irretrievable. Even with his near-constant travel, the ocean was a sight well forgotten.
He blinks out of his trance at the sound of his name coming from across the dark room. He stands from the chair he'd found and comes face to face with a man, a tender smile making his eyes crinkle at the edges. The man opens his arms in a strong embrace, pounding him hard on the back. A bit uncomfortable with the gesture, the boy breaks away, firm hands grabbing his shoulders, his heart sputtering uncontrollably in his ears.
"It is time," the man says, the smile still fresh on his face. He pats the boy on the shoulders, almost lovingly. "Time to prove yourself worthy to the cause."
The boy smiles and nods, excited, but also nervous for the upcoming events. They'd planned and mapped every detail to perfection, all with the boy's guidance. Nothing can go wrong.
All will be well in the end, he repeats in his mind, the words the only thing keeping him from turning back completely.
"I won't let you down, sir," the boy says confidently, pushing his uncertainties aside. His life is all coming down to this moment. Time to erase his formidable past and rewrite a new future.
"I know you won't," the man replies with a stern gaze, placing even more pressure on the boy's shoulders. He sees a few other people he knows gather behind the man's broad shoulders, smiling at him with steely eyes. The man pats his shoulders before releasing his iron grip and facing the crowd.
"And now we commence!" he shouts, holding his arms wide. The small crowd breaks into small applause before heading out the door into the common area.
The boy turns to the window one last time, letting his eyes savor the pure blue of the calm waves, knowing it will all end in fire. He breaks his gaze from the glass and trails behind the man, looking back at him with a sly smile.
There's no turning back.
It has begun.
