If you told me I was the last one in the town who received the news, I wouldn't normally be surprised. I spent most of my time by a small lake a little out of town; it was peaceful, quiet. It was what I needed. But when the news contained the second biggest event in my life thus far, that surprised me. Everyone knew this was where I spent most of my time, fishing and earning a bit of money for my family. Yet nobody came to tell me first. It was my younger brother that brought the news, crashing noisily through the bushes and trees to where I was sat. He came and layed next to me on the cool grass, panting heavily. "You sound like you've just run a mile! Something you want to tell me or did you just want to shatter my peace. You have a habit of both to be honest," I said playfully. He looked at me indignantly before replying " I do not! Anyway, haven't you heard?" I was only half listening to him as I reeled in my line -all the fish would've been scared away. "Heard what?" I asked, clearing everything away and preparing to leave. Jasper rushed towards me and grabbed me, making me drop everything I was holding. "Jasper, you clumsy-"
"You're in!"
"Huh? In where?"
"The army, you idiot. You and Seth, you've been accepted as young recruits!" exclaimed Jasper joyously, his eyes brimming with excitement. Before I really had processed this information, I found myself being dragged back in the direction of the town. When I finally recovered my voice outside my house, I yanked my hand from Jasper's grip. He looked round, confused and hurt, "I need to do something with my fishing stuff. I'll be back in a minute," I told him, wandering towards the direction of the house. I was still in a daze as I sauntered around the house, putting everything in the cellar and changing into some fresh clothes. Jasper's look of impatience vanished as I reappeared and followed him in the direction of the town centre. The cobblestone streets, usually lightly populated with people are completely deserted. However, as I draw closer, it soon becomes clear where everybody is; the town centre sounds like festival day in May. And it's August. Turning the last corner into the town centre, I'm suddenly overwhelmed with people. I can see Seth, my best friend, above everyone else, standing on the edge of a statue. He's currently looking the other way, meaning his coal black hair is the only part of his head visible at the moment. I can seeing him moving round the statue and a minute later, he waves at me. As people start to register that I am here, I get pushed forward through the crowd until eventually, I'm just below Seth, who helps me up beside him. The roar at seeing both of us up there from the crowd is like a volcano erupting. "This is madness!" I exclaim, smiling at Seth. He returns the smile, before replying "Nah man, this is fame!" He's loving every minute of the attention as he punches the air in happiness. The crowd grow louder and even more ecstatic as Seth then attempts to crowd surf. I can't help but laugh. And somewhere up above, I can hear my mother and my sister laughing too.
