I managed to stumble across the muddy field where the boy was nonchalantly puffing on his cigarette. He had seemed to notice me making my way along the grime as he offered a hand. I accepted and leaped over the final bits of clotted mud. "I'm Max." He finally admitted. He wasn't looking down upon me anymore, he was looking curiously at me, glancing up and down. "Have you heard about the investigation?" I tried to grab his attention back to my face. "Nope. What investigation?" His head hitched back up, his face only becoming more curious by the second. "Anthony. They believe someone in our school did it." "Why are you telling me this?" "I just wanted to tell someone and you seem like the kind of shady guy who keeps secrets." I laughed hearing something so strange come out of my mouth. "I've got a lot of secrets that's for sure." He muttered, gripping his lighter. "Spill then." "Huh?" "You can't just say that and not spill at least one secret." I complained. "Fine. But only because I can trust you." I smiled, listening in. "My dads in prison for arson. Wrongly accused. Obviously." I wasn't expecting it to be that dark. What do you expect from a boy called Max anyway though? That he secretly loves bunnies?

He seemed to be making the best of my dyer curiosity as he smiled at me. "Can I get your number? You know.. in case you wanna tell me any more secrets." He said winking. I cringed and handed him my phone. "Hey um.." I began as I put my phone back into my jean pocket. "Do you think this investigation will lead back to m-me?" I stuttered. "No. Why?" He asked. "Anthony and I were kind of a thing until he... cheated on me." Why am I telling him this? And why isn't he reacting in a curious or shocked way? He just seems to be acting cool as always. "I think it's safe to say you'll be fine." He reassured compassionately. We were interrupted as a police officer shouted across the field and an echo let out i and Max's names. We exchanged a glance and i shakily jogged over, following his lead.

Max released his hand behind him so I could grab it and in my blinded state I accepted willingly. His hand was cold and mean hearted, but it still at the same time made him feel even more trusting. I squeezed it tight and I could feel his bravery through our connection. He slowed down so he could walk beside me and he put his arm around my shoulder, pulling me close. The sudden intimacy jolted me up like a lightning bolt, my heart pounding intensely. Before i could stop myself, tears flooded out of my sparkling eyes and he pulled me even closer, still leading me along behind the clueless police officer. He whispered to me, "nothing bad will happen to you, ever. I promise."

After following aimlessly, the officer finally spoke, "you two are both going to be interviewed in separate rooms about what happened. Do you understand?"
"Yes." Max said firmly, gritting his teeth. I looked up at him as he looked directly into the officers gaze. He looked as if fire could burn in his eyes by his passion alone.

"Did you know Anthony?"
"Yes."
"Were you close? What was your relationship?"
"We used to date."
"What happened?"
"He cheated on me."

This interview was making me look so guilty and I was sweating which, granted, didn't help.

"How long did you date?"
"Around 14 months."
"When did he cheat on you?"
"You do know this is a sensitive subject for me right?"
"What? I'm trying to do a professional interview."
"But your questions are insensitive and can't you see I was just crying?"
"Oh stop."
"You fucking stop!"

After that I stormed out, my vision suddenly turning dizzy. Did I just yell at a police officer? Fuck. I tried to grab on to something but I failed, collapsing to the ground and everything turning black...
