The club night
Was Iris just another woman in a doomed affair?
Drinking is not a solution. But at least it can help to forget the pain for a while. She felt alone and so incomplete; like she had been thrown into an endless pit of isolation.
She sat at the bar sipping her vodka. It was her first time. And unlike others, she wasn't excited for her first experience.
She regretted wearing a dress. It was too tight for her. And she was rather comfortable being tomboyish. Listening to her best friend Liz was a bad decision. "Iris, you're looking amazing! All the boys will be undressing you at the dance with their eyes as soon as you walk in!" She remembered Liz words. But it was all pointless, as she had no one with whom to enjoy.
A man stared her across the bar as she was a tantalising woman. Iris looked out of place with her long hair around her and her sexy dress covering her beautiful body. As usual, Iris stood out of the crowd. She was a bit short. She had always thought of herself as gawk, and she felt that people stared her for all the wrong reasons. Her friends begged to differ; they said she was close to breathtaking in her length. Iris always responded, 'uh-huh, sure, don't I wish ' she didn't see herself that way and she knew she never would. She was an ordinary, regular person.
The only make up she ever wore was a little mascara and occasionally lipstick. That night, she wore neither, yet looked breathtaking.
The man had not seen such a beauty like her before. Sipping her drink, he kept his gaze on her every move. She looked sad, which made her, even more, out of the place because everyone else was having a good time except her.
Is she alone or waiting for a friend? The man pondered.
He approached the young lady in question. Sipping his drink, he waited for her to turn to him. After several minutes passed without acknowledgement, the man then decided to make the first move.
"What brings such a nice girl here?" He said. It wasn't such a finest lines.
Iris gazed up and down at the length of his body and turned away from him. She was too absorbed in her sadness.
" Senorita, can I do the honours to buy you one of the best drinks in the bar ?" He asked.
Iris nodded her head negatively. But the man could not give up on such a gorgeous woman." Is there anything I can do for you. Want to come to dance?" He kept persisting.
Iris slightly turned her head to see him. Her vision was blurred. She strained her eyes so that the man looms in her line of vision.
" If I need you to do something for me, would you do it?" Iris asked.
There was not even a second of hesitation before the man said yes." Of course my lady, just ask for anything."
Iris hummed , her eyes travelling into the distance as if deep in thought. " I need a hug. Can you do that for me?"
The man immediately sprang from his seat and neared Iris. But just as he was about to hug her, his hands were pushed away by a tall muscular guy. The latter was brewing from anger. The veins on his neck popped out like chords, distinctly visible and frightening.
Silence settled over the place. She looked closely trying to figure out who the person was. Who she saw made the first words on her lips remain unspoken. She thought her eyes were deluded, but the reality was too obvious to be mistaken.
Instead of feeling a great sense of relief for seeing a familiar face, she felt worst.
That familiar sickly sweet voice rang in her ears and tore her soul. A voice that she never wanted to hear again. Her mind had decided to play against her as if it tried to open up the chest of drawers in the dark corners of a room, searching through memories, swiping through faces until the one with the brightest brown eyes and sexy body was found.
Stay calm, she thought. Stay calm
The pain that surged up inside her chest was nothing compared to the agony in these memories that haunted her day and night until she found an inefficient yet working way to live. Closing her eyes would be a futile attempt to wipe that picture of that person.
Will she face that person or walk away?
