"Lily, do your homework before you watch TV. It'll rot your brain..." My mom called, but I payed no attention. The TV was on, but I stared at the wall in a kind of daze. My half-completed Algebra homework sat on my lap.
I yawned. It was a normal Sunday afternoon, the kind of Sunday afternoon that makes you want to fall asleep in your nice, cozy bed. Like anything and everything that happened that Sunday afternoon was much less important than the weight of my eyelids. It was the kind of Sunday afternoon - not too sunny, not too cloudy, not too hot, not too cold - that simply passes by, unnoticed by all but a few.
Suddenly there was a rhythmic tapping at the window. I looked to see a girl, probably 5 years old, smiling and rapping the glass. It shocked me awake. I had no idea who she was - we lived in a small, gated community where everyone knew each other and children brought for playdates didn't just wander off. The girl had a dozen balloons on strings clamped in her fist. I watched her as she stared right at me, smiling her little gap-toothed smile, and watched as she let the balloons go and they flew up into the serene sky like so many butterflies to a flower.
I watched as she disappeared.
Literally disappeared. Not like she just ducked so she was pressed against the side of the house under my window, but like *poof,* gone. Just vanished into thin air.
My algebra homework fluttered to the floor.
"What. The. Hell. Was. That."
