I woke up at 5 A.M to the sounds of the ocean, crashing against the shore softly, like it was trying to lull all of the night owls asleep. I reluctantly got up from my warm and comfy bed, to go downstairs and get a glass of water. As I approached the kitchen, I could tell someone had closed the curtains again, the kitchen is the only place you can see a better view of the ocean from the house, as I got a glass of water, I looked out to the ocean, and felt somewhat compelled to go to it, as if it was telling me to come home...I snapped out of it when I heard something drop, I looked down and saw a picture of my mother on the floor, it had small cracks in it but it was still good...I never really met my mother, she died when I was so young.
I put the picture back, making sure it was sturdy, then I started making my way back up to my room, school was starting in a few hours, so I had time to spare. I went into my mother's room, which father wouldn't like but he never knows when I go in. I always go to this chest in my mother's closet because its been locked for as long as I can remember and I want to know whats inside it. I've written down to my father asking him if he could tell me what inside and he said he will when im 18...which is lucky for me since its in a couple of weeks. The chest is so beautiful, it has a painting of me my mother and my father on it and then it has a bunch of seals under us in the ocean....the chest has to be repainted soon cause if not, no one will know what's on it anymore.
I exit my mother's room and sneak back to my room, to finish my homework and do some 'personal' research, my homework that I had to finish was about myths, and I got put on the job of looking up what 'selkies' were. In all my life I have never even heard of a selkie before, and trust me I would have since everyone in town loves talking about myths and superstitions, but nope, no one ever mentioned selkies...i thought to myself 'it was weird though, because right when my teacher pulled my number when he was on the 'selkie' part of the list, he kind of went pale...maybe it was because he didn't know what a selkie was either but not knowing something doesn't make you look like you're about to throw up, not knowing something makes you excited to learn about it...so what was wrong?' I shrugged it off and finished my homework then looked at the clock, it read '7:30 A.M' so I turn off my laptop and put my homework in the folder then shoved them both in my bag before finding a new change of clothes and heading to the shower.
At School
When I arrive to school, I hear some people talking about what myths they're doing and how they already know so much about the myth, then I hear others talk about what a selkie is and how strange it was when the teacher went pale, and it was indeed strange. As I get to my locker and was about to open it, the principle walked over to me "Mrs. Evans I'd like to see you in my office, if that's no problem" I shook my head and followed him to his office. As I enter I felt a wave of coldness run over me, a weird thing to happen since it was actually pretty hot today, even in the school, I sat down and waited for Mr.Landon to speak "as you are well aware of, you have been assigned the work of researching a selkie, and I am here to tell you not to look too far into selkies. The reason being, that past students have also looked into selkies and have taken things too far, they have got to the extreme measure of saying they are a selkie and that they need to find their seal skins but they were all diagnosed with a mental condition that made them think like that, and even if you don't suffer from anything I want you to be careful, understood?" I nodded then wrote down 'If it wouldn't be any trouble can I ask a few things?' and passed it to Mr. Landon, as he read it I got the cold feeling again... it was weird, as if some force wanted Mr. Landon to leave, he got a call.
He spun around so he could have a bit of privacy, and as his back was turned I looked around.. everything seemed normal at first until I found a key on the floor, it looked old, like an antique; something in my gut was telling me to put it in my bag before Mr. Landon turned around, and that's just what I did. As he got off the phone he turned back to me and hung up the phone, handing me back my notepad I scribbled down that I must hurry to class, in order not to be late, and handed it to him, then I gathered my stuff and headed out to class, the whole time having a dreadful but also comforting feeling hanging over me.
As I got to class, everyone was talking in hushed whispers, like something bad had happened. Then I looked over to a group of teachers surrounding something, I quietly walked over and saw...seal skin...what could that be doing here? how did someone even sneak that into the school? The teacher called the principle and then he ordered that until we catch who brought in the seal skin, that we stay at home and locked all doors and windows, he also said that he'd inform our parents of what has happened. So everyone got packed up and left school...and I left school with one extra thing: The Key.
