Quebec City, QuebecTania flipped the book to the next page, her lips curling at the feeling of the clean, crisp page on her fingers and continued reading about Bella's romance with Edward. It was official, she was in love with the addictive, suspenseful love story-Twilight. She read the young adult book not because she wanted to perfect her English, but because she loved getting lost in the pages.
Sitting in a nook in the opulent library, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lining the walls, and the sweet, musty smell of old books wafting into her nose, she was lost alright. She loved being a part of Bella and Edward's world. Their love was unique and real. Tania wanted something like that some day, the kind of love that consumed you, body and soul.
That was the kind of love her papochka and mamochka had. They were like the infamous Bonnie and Clyde. They had built their own empire and ruled it together. Not only that, but they had been powerful and rich and had thought nothing could come in between them, but something did.
Death.
Tania's mother died while giving birth to her, some kind of complications the doctors had said. Her mother had been too weak and hadn't made it. Tania's father had been devastated, losing his soulmate almost broke him, but not quite, cause like a phoenix rising from the ashes, her father emerged stronger, smarter and more powerful. Men like Vladimir Petrov were the kind who never showed weakness, if they did, that's how their enemies got to them.
Growing up Tania's father treated her like a tsvetok. She was his flower, delicate and untouchable. He had kept her away from the world and gave her everything so that she didn't want for anything. Tania loved her father, but she didn't approve of what he did for a living. She knew that he was a dangerous man, she'd lost count on how many times she'd heard the screams and shouts of pain in the basement of their mansion back in Moscow.
There's a quote that says; "You can choose your friends, but not your family". Despite everything her papochka had done and continued to do until this day, he was still her father and she was his daughter. She had no choice but to love him, she only hoped that one day her father would change, before it was too late for him.
She finished reading Chapter Sixteen and, pushing her glasses back up her nose by their bridge, using two fingers, had to force herself to not go on to the next chapter to find out what would happen when Bella meets Edward's parents. With a bone-stretch and a yawn, she vacated the red, cushioned chair. Her limbs were mushy, and her eyes were heavy-lidded from spending two hours in the same position, but there was no other place at Hollis she enjoyed more than the library.
She hid her book where she always did - between two big, old history books - and then transitioned into the music room adjacent to the library. The airy and open space made Tania feel like she just stepped into Marie Antoinette's private music room. The color palette was perfect and European paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and antique furnishings from the House Collection were displayed in the room.
