Runaways

Chapter One

It was May 17th, 1984 at 8:00 A.M. The blaring sound of his alarm clock invaded Dylan Brandis' mind as he opened his eyes to be greeted by the blazing sun. He slammed his hand on the alarm clock situated on his bedside table, his head throbbing. He then rolled off of his bed while knocking the clock down with him in the process. Without the effort of picking it up, Dylan stumbled across his room to his stack of t-shirts covering his chair like a coating of snow over a pavement in the winter. He snatched the first shirt he saw and pulled it over his tousled dark brown hair. After spotting a pair of his jeans on his floor, Dylan slipped them on following his tattered pair of black Chucks that barely had their soles attached.

Donna, Dylan's mother, was in the kitchen as her son strolled out of his pigsty of a room and picked up his school bag. She had a frying pan in one hand, her other hand was placed on her hip.

"You gonna eat today?" she said while pointing the frying pan at Dylan. It was obvious to see that her son was practically skin-and-bones, so she believed that eating breakfast at least once a week would change that.

Dylan turned to her, and with finger guns, let out a "Nope."

His mother shook her head and laughed quietly to herself. Dylan was almost always running late, so eating breakfast was a rare occurrence. She may not say this, but Donna wanted her son to wake up earlier in the morning. Not just so he would eat, but so they could talk. After she took on her second job, the two of them barely had time for each other. Donna has no idea how school was going with Dylan, or how he is in general. They were living under the same roof, yet it seemed as if they were on opposite sides of the planet.
