Lena doesn't realize that she's nervous until the sound of the doorbell.
Dressed in an elegant black off-the-shoulder gown, complemented by delicate diamond earrings and necklace set - a gift from Lex... his last one, actually. Her hair styled in an intricate low bun and makeup that accentuates the color of her eyes and the fullness of her lips, she'd felt pampered and ready enough to let her team of stylists go earlier than planned.
She's in the middle of giving Stacey, the babysitter, the last run through the list of instructions when Lexie jumps and bolts down the stairs at the first chime of the front door ringtone.
"Lex-crap." Lena tries to stop her, slipping her feet into the high heels. "I'll get her." she flashes Stacey an apologetic smile before scurrying after her daughter.
The length and cut of the dress are constraining enough for her to slow her pace on the stairs and she can't be more grateful for the security of the building because Lexie is already opening the door.
"Hi, Kara!-" she can hear Lexie gasp.
"Hey, baby girl," the voice and the pet name brings a smile to Lena's face.
"Wow, you look so good!" Lexie blurts, sparking Lena's curiosity.
"T-Thank you, Lexie."
"Come, Mama's waiting for you."
Lena reaches the bottom of the stairs the moment Lexie hops into the living room Kara in tow.
Kara in a tuxedo.
In a black floral jacquard tuxedo with burgundy velvet low cut waistcoat matching the shawl lapels and flap pockets of the jacket, crisp white shirt, and slim black tie and burgundy velvet loafers, no socks.
...
She still refuses to wear more than minimal make-up but the thin frame golden aviator style glasses more than compensate for it.
...
And she cut her hair!
Loose and styled in messy waves, her golden locks are now couple inches shorter, reaching just to her shoulders instead of falling down her back.
"Doesn't she look great?!" Lexie chirps, bouncing on her feet.
"Absolutely..."
"S-Stunning..."
Both women mumble at the same time, not bothering which one of them the question was meant for. Lexie squeaks all the same and Lena follows the smile stretching Kara's lips with her own.
There's something different about the woman in front of her that Lena can't decipher just yet. It's not just the looks or the hair, it's something in those broad shoulders in that straight spine and the lack of the fidgeting in her fingers that Lena already got used to. And it's in the confident stride Kara takes towards her to peck her on the cheek, hand landing and staying on one of Lena's elbows. She can't put her finger on it, but she doesn't dislike it.
"Hi," Kara says. "you l-look... amazing."
"So do you," Lena purrs, even though her fingers brush over her necklace self-consciously.
Lexie giggles a few feet away and, to Lena's amusement, Kara winks at the girl with a widening grin.
"Are you... ready?"
"Yeah, yes, I'll just.." Lena motions over Lexie who's beaming at them, rocking on her feet with her hands clasped behind her back like an excited little puppy.
