"y/n, doll? what song would you like to dance to?"
she grinned at her beloved boyfriend, a mischievous glint in her eye.
"hm, how about a duet?"
james smiled, and winked at her before grabbing the record from the shelf.
"baby, its cold outside?" he questioned with a knowing look.
y/n took no time in crossing the room, her bare feet making thumping noises on the carpet.
"you, james buchanan barnes, deserve a kiss. you read my mind!" she said that every time, every year since they were 16.
placing a kiss to her beloveds lips, she hurriedly pulled away. she snatched the record from him and gave an innocent smile when he raised his eyebrows at her antics.
slowly rolling the record from its place in the sleeve, she placed it on the turn table. dropping the needle, it landed in the spot she had memorised as the start of her favorite song to dance to with her soldier. as the crackle of music began, she swayed her hips teasingly towards james, squealing when he pulled her forcefully against his chest.
"you little minx, c'mere you." he whispered, spinning her around. the both grinning to each other.
with their arms wrapped around the other, they began to sing to their "respective parts" as they would state if anyone had asked. a few minutes had passed, just singing when bucky broke away from the music to speak.
"you know, i wouldnt mind doing this with you 'til we're old." bucky whispered.
"our kids would get sick of us, jamie." y/n laughed into his chest.
"well, that'll be okay. we've still got a few years alone, yeah?"
looking up at him, her features soft as she placed his left hand on her stomach with her own, their rings sparkling even in the dimmed light.
"more like eight or nine more months?" she tugged her lip in between her teeth.
james' face lit up, wide eyes and a grin now gracing his own features.
"really!?" he squeaked out, causing a giggle to leave his darlings lips.
she voiced a quiet conformation of "mhm", as he dropped to his knees, face in front of her belly. pressing the lower half of his face into it gently, he looked up at her, blue eyes sparkling.
"theres a baby in here, d'ya promise youre not pulling my leg? you know how bad i want to have a little one ple- really?" his eyes were watering as he admired her, hoping they had her smile, and all of the oddities of her personality.
tears streamed down her face, giggles falling from her lips at the excitement james shared.
"yeah." she choked out, nodding her head.
she ran her hand through james' hair as the other wiped at her tears. as james talked to into her tummy, though, the wiping of tears was no use. she sobbed into her hand— a happy cry, she promised.
"james it doesnt even have a heartbeat yet, it cant even hear you." she smiled stroking his hair.
"i dont care sweetheart, gotta talk to him early on, i want to talk to him every day so i dont miss when he can hear me."
he placed a kiss on her tummy once more and stood.
"yes, i know its a boy." he grinned. "can we name him grant? after stevie?"
she nodded with a sniffle and wrapped her arms around him.
"of course, hes our best friend. hes dealt with us for longer than anyone else can say, i think he deserves it."
"i think you're right, buttercup." he spoke into her hair, kissing her head afterwards. "oh my, you know what that means right?"
she shook her head 'no'.
"are you ready to get a house with me, mrs. barnes?" he pulled her away from him softly and grinned.
"id do anything with you, mr. barnes." she smiled back, leaning in, placing a kiss on his pink lips.
pulling away, they spent the rest of the evening listening and dancing to christmas records while they discussed the plans for their future.
