"Dude, no."
"Yes, you have to. Remember, what your dad said, 'The worse thing she can say is no'."
"...What kind of logic is that?"
"The best kind. Now get going!"
My best friend, Jon, pushed me towards her. My anxiety slowly began to swallow me as I was getting closer to my crush, who was alone going through her locker. I shrugged my friend's hands off my back and said, "Okay, Okay. I'm going."
He finally let go and smiled, saying good luck and all. I slowly made my way to my sweet, sweet maybe future queen. Her name was Megan. She wasn't popular. She wasn't especially attractive, she had braces, a couple of acne scars and had to wear thick corrective lenses.
Unfortunately, I was not one of those cool guys that had swag and awesomeness within them. Instead, I was a gangly nerd. It wasn't the time to bemoan such things though. I was desperate to improve my image, maybe get a girlfriend. If girls like Megan were attainable, I just would have to take what I could get!
"H-hey Megan! It's uhh... Nice weather today, right?"
I could feel it, my heart beating out of my chest wanting to run out, my palms slick with a undencent amount of sweat, even my breathing was short. I was too nervous.
Sadly, Megan wasn't doing me any favors with the look of contempt she was giving me either. But, since I decided to had come this far, No matter what I would look like an idiot so I might as well go for it.
"So the...*ahem*... The Halloween dance is coming up and I was wondering if, uhh, if you'd like to... Go with me? I mean if-if you want to, that is! It's not a big deal or anything–"
Snickering was heard from somewhere, but I didn't want to look. I couldn't look. Not when Megan was staring at me hard enough to set me aflame.
"No."
I swallowed thickly. Well... At least, I had taken a shot. "Oh... That's cool. I'll just–"
"Sorry, I wasn't clear. Not just no. Hell no." Megan clarified, her tone shifting from dismissive to unbridled disdain. "You asked me, me, out to the dance? I might not be a cheerleader or hang out with the popular girls but you honestly thought you had a chance? Bad enough you're a nerd. You look like the model skeleton in Mister Preston's class came alive and found an acne-covered skinsuit!" Well, I had been going to the dermatologist about it... "You smell like your route to school takes a detour through the sewer!" My mom keeps forgetting to get me extra-strength deodorant... "You're disgusting. Just me talking to you long enough to tell you this is enough to tank my social cred for the next month. So do us both a favor and don't talk to me ever again, got it?"
Megan's auburn hair flipped at him as she turned and stormed off, leaving me, Y/N L/N standing in the school hallway, looking and feeling like a total and complete idiot. Jon walked and grabbed my shoulders and pulled me into a hug. It didn't help with the feeling but sort of made thing less sad.
I trudged the halls in sadness, Jon along side me as we made our way. Megan broke my heart into impossible to pick up pieces. We picked up the pace as through the halls as the jeering of his classmates crushed my spirits even more.
My Dad had told me not to be afraid of rejection, that if I failed I should shrug it off and try again. But how could I shrug off something like that?
The only thing was feeling was sadness.
It hurts to bad that I couldn't cry. Not because I didn't want to...I was because I couldn't...
