From The Symbole Of Love, Sacrifice and beauty in a war to sexual overtones. The story of The Ancient goddess Ashtar began. A carving project of historical Syrian civilizations was launched voluntarily by students from the Art Institute in Damascus, Rim Al Dahan and Sezar Mazokh at The festival of (Under The Sky of Damascus) in a cultural event under the authority of the directorate of museums and antiquities.
The students were told to pick a piece of their choice, found and documented by the museum. that's how the student Radwan Baset ended up getting the project of carving the ancient Syrian goddess Ashtar on a tree in front of the directorate of museums and antiquities building.
"We represented our ideas to each other as students and each of us picked something to carve. In our point of view, Ashtar was a beautiful and historical symbol" Sezar Mazokh stated.
He also added "In our first day we didn't have the time to do much so we only outlined what we wanted to carve without adding any detail to the sculpture"
He also explained the incident that occurred on the same day after midnight, when an anonymous person carrying an electric saw destroyed all the carvings that had feminine features. When the students returned to the carving points the second day, they were traumatized of what they heard and seen. They wondered, how can someone with an electric saw, in a secure area, right in front of the directorate of museums and antiquities do such a thing without getting noticed by the cameras around the area or get arrested.
Sezar Mazokh stated that they were worried about further harassment from the public. He said, "All this happened over outlines of a sculpture imagine if we had finished up the piece what would have happened then?"
The Student Radwan Baset Decided to remove all that was left from the carving to avoid harassments.
"The sad part was, that most of the unpleasant comments were made by university students and doctors. In my opinion, we have a big historical and cultural knowledge gap in our society. I'm certain that most of the people who harassed us have never been into the museum. they had no clue that The Ancient Goddess Ashtar is our symbol of Beauty, Sacrifice and love in war."
