Screaming.. Crying.. So much was happening before me that I had no time to process it. My father was in the courtyard fighting off the Imps and Minions of Hell itself. My mother was running the halls with me in her arms and Julius following closely behind. I was 5 years old and Julius was 8. He's been training with my father ever since he became part of this kingdom to be my bodyguard. He was orphaned at our gates. We took him in. Now years after that day, we get ambushed. Outnumbered, but we're still fighting back with all the strength we have. My mother took us to the master bedroom and looked around for a spot to hide us from the monsters close behind. She looked around and then saw the wardrobe on the other side of the room that was large enough for me and Julius to fit inside.
"Stay here, you'll be okay. Julius please, protect her no matter what."
She set me down in the wardrobe and Julius sat right next to me, hugging me as she spoke to him. He nodded to her and she smiled as though she was satisfied with his answer. Tears flowed down her cheeks as she planted a kiss on my forehead. She closed the doors and stood her ground with her sword unsheathed. She fought with her life but she was outnumbered within minutes. She was stabbed in the chest then through the middle of her back, making her fall limp. My eyes widened, tears flowing down my cheeks and a pain in my chest. I went to scream but Julius covered my mouth and hugged me tighter. I soon fainted with only the image of my mother lying on the ground and the Imps surrounding her, eyes glowing white and smiles so wicked it could kill you in a second.
*Time Skip*
"Kanii, are you awake?"
I heard 2 knocks on my door and a voice of what sounded to be Julius calling out to me. I blinked a few times and rubbed my eyes to adjust to the light.
"Come in!"
I yawned and stretched my arms as the door creaked open. Julius peeked around the corner and bowed to greet me.
"Good morning, Princess."
He smiled a bit and stood up straight.
"You know you don't have to be so modest around be, right? Heheheh."
"I know, but you are going to be crowned as the queen in a week and it's best that I am to be modest in your presence."
"Well, my rules now, so you don't have to be."
I snickered and got up to grab one of my dresses to wear.
"Kanii, are you ready to be crowned queen? I mean, its been years since the... incident and we realized that in order to have this kingdom still be ours, it needs a ruler. You're turning 19 years of age in a week, so that is when you'll be able to wear the crown."
As I got dressed, i grew slightly silent. My smile faded slowly. I thought about the whole incident and tears started to form in my eyes. I shook it off and turned to him with a smile plastered on my face.
"I am positive I am ready for this. It might me difficult but I'm ready."
Julius looked at me and could tell i was hiding my true feelings, but, he kept silent. I got on my royal blue, knee length dress and walked to the door, Julius following closely behind me.
"So, what's on today's schedule my trusty guard?"
I nudged him in the arm and he just walked casually with his hands behind his back, slightly smiling at my action.
"Well, we have to get you ready for King Farris of the Elven tribe in the East to come to the kingdom as for Leader Alrinner of the Viking tribe in the West."
"Wait, that's today?! I thought that was in two days from now?!"
"Well, that's what I thought too but the messenger came by our gates to deliver two letters from both of the tribes saying they are coming two days earlier than what we discussed."
I started to stress out a bit and think of why they wanted to come early. Julius hesitated but he placed his hand on my shoulder to reassure me that everything was going to be fine. I smiled at his gesture and continued on to the kitchen. Julius gave me a slightly confused grin.
"Why are you going into the kitchen?"
"It's because I want to mingle with some of my maids, hehehe."
I did a small twirl and walked into the kitchen. Julius smiled more and shook his head as he did so. I walked in and grabbed an slice of pie from the tray that was being prepared. It was a cinnamon apple slice appetizer for the guests.
"Good morning princess Kanii, did you sleep well?"
One of my maids greeted me with a gentle smile as she cut up some vegetables and fruits.
"I did, thank you for asking. What about you? Did you get well rested yourself?"
Oh, why, yes, i did. Thank you."
She smiled more and continued to cut up the vegetables. Two other maids walked in and seen julius leaning against the banister, him making sure i was alright. They started to giggle and talk to each other, walking over to the counter to do their parts in preparing. We all started to chat and converse about random things in our lives. I grabbed a knife from one of the blocks and started to cut up some bread and create meat slices aswell. As i did, i got a little distracted by Julius reading a small book he carries with him whenever he isn't doing much. As I looked up at him, i didn't realize how close the knife was to my hand and the tip of it cut right down the center of my hand. Not to deep, but, just enough to make it bleed. I pulled back my hand and winsed at the pain, hiding it a bit since I didn't want Julius to get worried. He heard me stagger back and winse, making him rush over to see what happened.
"Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?"
"I-I'm okay, it's just a small scratch, nothing to worry about!"
"Then let me see."
"I swear I'm okay."
"Then let me see it if it's nothing to worry about."
I looked away and showed him my hand. He looked a bit shocked and grabbed some cloth to wet under the water and to wrap around the wound.
"This is more than just a scratch, Kanii. Please, don't hide stuff like this. I need to know at all times if you're okay."
"I'm sorry."
"That's okay. Now, lets go get it properly cleaned, okay?"
I nodded and we walked over to the door. We said our goodbyes and continued over to the bathroom acrossed the hall where we keep some small medical suppies in case of non-emergency situations. He sat me down on a stool and grabbed some medical alcohol contents to kill anything that could infect the wound, aswell as a bandage and medical tape. He poured a bit of the alcohol onto a rag and patted down the wound with it gently. I winsed a bit in pain and he stopped for a second so the pain could subside. As he finished working on the wound, I couldn't help but smile at a thought that popped into my head. I shook off my expression so Julius didn't notice.
"There, better?"
"Better, thank you."
"You're welcome, princess. Now, shall we continue to the garden so you can tend to the flowers?"
"Yes, let's go."
We both stood up and continued our way to the botanical garden. My mother's garden of eden.
