Reality can be disappointing. When reality disappoints, imagination steps in to kick things up a level or two. The trouble is imaginations can't resist running wild; they love filling our minds with ideas that colour how we see the world. Then, like a song that gets stuck in your head, some ideas are hard to shake, especially when it seems like they're becoming a reality right before your eyes.

Summer had officially ended in the charming town of Wolfville that was nestled in the rolling, green foothills. It was the day before school started, but Britney was in a good mood despite that fact. She hopped into her pink Mini Cooper and made sure she still looked put together.

Britney turned her head every which way in her re-examination of herself. She was about to start the car when she realized she had forgotten to put on eyeliner. Reaching into her purse, she found the eyeliner and began applying it.

When she was done, she admired her eyes. They were light brown, and she thought they were the best feature of her face. She was also sure that few people would disagree with her, and if they did, they were likely blind. But that wasn't their fault, of course.

Naturally, she honked back and waved, telling them to go around. The guy in the blue truck yelled something as he raced past her. This made her think Toxic would be the perfect song for the rest of her drive to Hailey's.

Once Britney arrived, Hailey came rushing out to meet her bestie. A chorus of shrieks followed as they hugged each other. To the untrained eye, it would have seemed they hadn't seen each other in a hundred years. But in fact, they had seen each other just yesterday at the mall. With seat belts strapped, they made their way over to get Madison, the third member of the trio.

"It's crazy to think we're starting Junior Year like tomorrow," Hailey said.

"I know, right? It's absolutely insane. I don't even know where summer went."

"Are you excited to be head cheerleader?"

"They still have to vote on it, Hail—"

"You know you're gonna win, Brit."

Britney rolled her eyes and smiled. "I know, but I don't want to count my ducks before they hatch, you know?"

"Are we still wearing our uniforms to school tomorrow?"

"Is butter a carb?"

"Uh, yeah. Oh!" Hailey exclaimed.

Soon, they pulled up at Madison's. She calmly walked out to the car, got in, and put her seat belt on. She said "Hi" when she got in, but Britney and Hailey just kept looking at her through the rear-view mirror.

"So, are we going, or are you two going to just keep looking at me? Not gonna lie, you're creeping me out."

But the silence and the staring continued.

"Seriously guys, I'm getting mad serial killer vibes from both of you."

"What do you think, Hail? Should we keep going?"

"The law of staring at Madison says that if you stare at her long enough, she'll spill her secrets," Hailey said.

Madison folded her arms, looked away, and said, "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Oh, come on, M!" Hailey exclaimed. "If you don't tell us in three, we're gonna say it."

"We're going to be late for the movie!"

"Three."

"You know we'll do it if you don't comply, M."

Madison pretended to inspect her nails.
