 "Did you hear that?"

The light flicked on at 2:09 in the morning, the bright glare waking me immediately.

"What?" I groaned, rolling over and blinking hard, trying to get past the blindness.

"I heard something, out here. Voices, and like, a scream." Greer was up, wearing just a long shirt and undies. She looked scared, and was trying to look out of the window on the door. It was a dirty window, plus the hall outside was dark, so there wasn't much to be seen.

"I didn't hear anything. Was that just now?" I yawned, standing up and putting my feet on the freezing floor. I walked over to the window, peeking out even though I knew I wouldn't see anything.

"A minute ago. It was distant, but I swear it wasn't a dream." Greer shivered, looking at me with wide, bright eyes. She looked so tiny and frail for some reason. Maybe it was the fact her legs were the same glowing white as the floor. Most of the redheads I'd met had ivory skin.

"Do you think it's the people Rowena was saying would help us?" Bo was suddenly behind us, offering Greer a blanket. She didn't bother look out the window, but instead pulled us away from it.

"Oh crap, that would be horrible." I gasped, one hand automatically going up to my mouth. I licked my lips nervously, hoping with all my might that wasn't the case.

We all fell silent, all silently praying Greer had been imagining things.

A scream caused us all to jump, and we looked at each other. It was the horrible, pained scream of a woman.

"Kara?...." Greer was blinking back tears and stepping back further away from the door.

"Get under the beds, now." Bo waved us away, putting one hand on the light switch. We obeyed, and I grabbed a blanket before diving between the bed frame and the floor. I pushed myself as far back as I could, my heart pounding so loud it hurt my ears.

The light went off, and I heard Bo crawl under her own bed.

The wait was agonizing, the only sound my breathing and pounding heart. It made me feel sick, the anxiety this whole situation brought on. I'd never liked being chased, or the feeling that someone was trying to get me. I'd hated tag, hide-and-go-seek and all other games that involved running from someone. This was real life now, and I found tears soaking my cheeks.

It felt like an eternity before we heard footsteps, running down the hall. The familiar jingle of keys was heard, and the door burst open and the light on.

"Girls, we have to run! They're-" It was Kara, but before she could finish her sentence she gasped deeply. She gargled a little, before falling over. I watched her head smash against the floor, my spot being the prime watching area. Kara's eyes and mouth were open, and blood was pooling around her.

I choked on my own tears, though silently. Even if it killed me, I wouldn't be the one making a sound.

"That the last one?" A male voice broke the dead silence, and I saw boots next to Kara's still-warm corpse.

"Yeah, I think so. Rowena said there were only three that she knew of." Another voice, another pair of leather boots.

This couldn't be happening. Our perfect plan was fading away so quickly, it hurt.

"I thought this was where the girl's were. Are they hiding?" The second voice, the deepest, sounded confused. I watched in horror as he walked around the room, stopping frequently.

I heard a very soft whisper, one I was sure involved some pointing towards the beds. It only made sense, us being under them. It was the only place in the entire room we could hide.
