It was October 30th and I was studying in my room for my ACT. My friend Laurie Strode was helping me study because she already has all the material down.

"Here, this question is easy. If you don't answer this correctly, I will be 100% convinced that you are actually retarded and have one brain cell." Laurie laughs out.

"Shut your fucking mouth. I've already convinced myself that I'm a retard so you're a little late to the party." I respond, pointing my pencil towards her.

Just as Laurie was about to say something, I heard my mom shout from downstairs. "Aida, dinner's ready! Bring Laurie down with you as well!"

"Okay, mom! We'll be down in a few minutes!" I shouted back.

I quickly look over to Laurie. "You heard the boss. Din din's ready." I smile.

Laurie looked back at me and shook her head. "You're ACTUALLY five years old."

I get off my chair and I start to head downstairs, expecting Laurie to follow behind but she seemed very fixated on the window. She stands there for a couple of seconds before I decide to speak up.

"Uhm, Laurie? You okay?" I asked her concerningly.

Laurie faces me, not taking her eyes off of whatever is outside my window. Her expression looked like she had just seen a ghost.

"Uh, yeah, just thought I saw something."

"Saw something? What was it? Is it still there?" I questioned.

"No, I'm just going insane." She shoots me a smile. "I don't think it's anything to be concerned about; let's go see what your mom made for 'din din.'"

Laurie and I sit at the dinner table along with my mother. There wasn't really any conversation and I can tell that Laurie was still spooked from whatever she saw outside my window. I didn't know if Laurie was okay with my bringing it up or not, but I just decided to keep my mouth shut.

I glanced over to my mom who looked a little worried as she examined Laurie but Laurie didn't seem to notice. My mother then asked "Laurie, sweetie--"

I cut my mom off by kicking her foot underneath the table and shot my mom a look as in to not say anything and my mom looks down at her food. I think Laurie noticed my mom's behavior and solemnly smiled at her. She began to reassure her that she was fine and that she didn't need to worry about her.

After another few seconds of silence, Laurie begins, "Do you mind if I stay over for the night? It's getting late and I don't really feel safe being outside at the moment."

My mother replied, "Of course you can stay the night, honey. You don't even need to ask! You can stay in the guest room across from Aida's room." she smiled.

"Wait, actually, Aida, do you mind if I stay in your room for the night? The guest room feels kind of alone, I guess. Maybe I'm just scared." Laurie adds.

I reply with a smirk, "Definitely, cutie."

"You know what, maybe not," Laurie whispers.

My mom laughs as I jokingly whine "Oh, you're no fun, Laurie."

"Whatever. It's already midnight and I think I'm ready to collapse and pass out," she says as she starts picking up her finished dish. Soon, the other two start to clean up as well.

I lay a blanket and some pillows on the floor next to my bed for Laurie to sleep on and hop onto my own. As soon as I get comfortable, I hear a crash outside of my front yard and Laurie shoots up.

"What was that?" Laurie asks in a panic.

"I don't know." I quickly get off my bed and start heading towards my bedroom door.

"Wait, what if it's someone dangerous?" Laurie stops me.

I smile at her. "I bet it's just a cat or something. I'll beat it up for scaring you if that's what you want." I laugh and head downstairs.

I open the front door and see a flowerpot knocked over with its contents spilling out. I look around to see if anyone was there and to my surprise, there was someone peering at me from the bushes ahead of me. Though it was hard to see, their face looked really pale...? Almost like they're wearing a mask.

"Hey! I know it's almost Halloween but would you mind fucking off and going to bed?!" I yell.

...

No response.

I hear Laurie shriek from upstairs so I quickly get back inside, lock the door and dash upstairs to check on her.

I throw my bedroom door open. "Laurie! Are you okay?!"

She pointed out the window and shakily replied. "That's the same man that was staring at me through the window earlier."

I look out the window to see if he was still there but the man had disappeared.

"Laurie, I think maybe it's just a sick Halloween prank. I'm sure we're fine." I reassured her. "You should get some sleep, it's late."

Laurie lays back down and surprisingly knocks out quickly. I couldn't help but wonder who that man was so I stare at the ceiling, unable to sleep throughout the whole night.
