Hermione walked into Pops after she got a text message from Mary who was expecting to see her. It was probably something that needed to be done for the case Mary had been working on to get Hermione out of prison, but if it really was something formal than she wouldn't have invited her at the towns diner. It didn't really matter though, Mary's invite was a good excuse for Hermione to get out of the Pembrooke. The more she wasn't around Hiram, the better.
Veronica had left to stay with Archie for a while since she couldn't bare to live under the same roof as her father. Hermione didn't really blame her for that, but she just didn't have to position to leave.
With Veronica not in the house anymore it left her with only her husband and his other daughter, which was giving her the creeps. They were always a front and she was just there alone.
Dinners were silent, and sleeping next to him terrified her. Not because she was afraid he would try to do anything to her, but just the thought of him touching her while she was in his web was making her nauseous already.
So that's why she took every opportunity to get out of the Pembrooke and luckily enough she was seeing one of the few people she actually still trusted in a way. Mary had worked her ass off to get her out of jail, even when in the end Veronica had to pull some strings to actually make sure she wasn't going to be behind bars.
There weren't much people who would stand up for her, certainly not after all the crimes she commited. At least Mary wanted to defend her, which she was extremely grateful for.
When she entered the diner the so familiar bell ring she had heard so many times when she worked there. Not only as an adult, she had worked there as a teenager too.
She remembered closing almost every night, but at least one of her friends back in the day, FP Jones, was there to close with her. And now? He was nowhere near a friend, even when this place was filled with the memories of the two of them making milkshakes and burgers.
Mary was already sitting in a booth and smiled slightly when she saw Hermione coming her way. She took place across of the redhead and gave her a small smile back. For some reason she felt a little awkward, since Mary hadn't told her why she wanted to see her today.
Hermione placed her purse onto the booth and almost nervously looked at the woman in front of her. ''You wanted to see me?'' She furrowed her eye-bow, waiting for Mary to explain the purpose of their meeting. It wasn't if someone would ask her to come down to Pop's to just have a cup of tea.
''Veronica told me you are re-reading your vows to Hiram?'' Mary came straight to the point. A few days ago the girlfriend of her son had been in her living room, asking if she could stay with them for a while, explaining the situation that was going on at home.
After everything that Mary had done for the trial she couldn't believe her ears when hearing the news from Veronica. Of course she could stay with them for as long as she needed, but Mary couldn't understand why Hermione had taken back Hiram. Even when she hadn't said it out loud, Mary knew that there wasn't any love there, so there had to be more behind it.
Hermione avoided her gaze instantly, knowing that her eyes would betray the fact that she felt ashamed of it. Not that she couldn't tell Mary, if there was one person in the world she could be honest with right now it was Mary Andrews.
She was just afraid that everything she was thinking would be so easy to read in her eyes. But maybe she didn't need to put on an act. Maybe she could be honest just for once.
''What choice do I have?'' Hermione scoffed. Everyone around her would think something of her and Hiram being back together again, but she actually cared about what Mary thought unlike the other opinions of people in this town. She felt the need to explain herself to her, making sure she knew that his wasn't a free choice.
