Sam hummed as he followed Guy into the Frontyard by Snerz hotel. The inside looked cozy, with a living room-like waiting area in the middle, it's wide but beautiful wood floors and stone walls. The taller briefcase buddy walked over to the check-in desk, where a purple, bespectacled man worked, looking down at a book that would seem too big for someone his size.
"Two rooms for the night," Guy said crisply, placing his briefcase to the floor.
"Sure thing!" the clerk replied cheerily, turning a page in his book and approaching his head to see the written components more closely. "Uh-oh! Sorry! But I've only got one room left. You'll have to share."
"Perfect!" Sam exclaimed, jumping onto his briefcase and pumping his fist into the air. "Slumber party!" He reached into his hat and pulled out the Goat's credit card, placing it into the clerk's view.
"Oh, excellent!" the purple man exclaimed. "If you wait just a second while I run your card..." Sam leaned on the desk while Guy stood there until the desk clerk spoke again.
"Here we go!" he finally said. "Here are the keys to your room. Go up the stairs to the third floor, and it should be the third door on the left."
"Great, thank you," Guy replied as he picked up his briefcase and took the keys. Sam jumped off of his own attaché and snatched it before following his friend happily.
"This'll be so much fun, Guy! We'll stay up late, watch movies, play games..." Sam started, listing off all of the activities he was hoping they could do overnight, getting a signature grumph from Guy.
"Sam, do they even have TVs here?" Guy huffed.
"Of course they would! At least I think so. Why wouldn't they have TVs in their hotel rooms?" Sam exclaimed, laughing. "That would be dumb!" Sam looked over to Guy, waiting for a response, but when he received none, the smaller bug-cat creature tilted his head and huffed. "Guy, what's wrong?"
"Hmm? Oh nothing, there's nothing wrong. Oh look here's our room!" Guy exclaimed suddenly, veering off subject and unlocking the hotel's door.
The two creatures entered, looking over where they'd be sleeping for the night. Sam's briefcase started rattling, Mr Jenkins' squawks exiting along with some grunts.
"Oh, he needs to get out," Sam said sadly, closing the door and going to unlatch the clips.
"Wait! Woah, woah!" Guy exclaimed. "We're going to hide the vases first! Last time I let him out in a hotel room, he destroyed every one of them with his random energy burst!"
Sam frowned and thought about it for a while before nodding. "Got it, amigo! I'm on it!" He exclaimed before picking up two vases and placing them into cabinets. He proceeded to do so with Guy's help until there were no more dangers regarding the delicate items.
"Can I let him out now?" Sam pleaded.
"Okay, fine," Guy sighed. "But make sure he doesn't make too much trouble. We don't want the other visitors finding out about him."
"Of course, Guy! Why, when have I ever not been responsible?" Sam asked. Guy was about to respond when Sam let Jenkins out, the chickeraffe warbling excitedly and running around.
"Oh boy..." Guy murmured under his breath.
"I know right, he's so happy now!" Sam exclaimed, laughing as he ran over to the hyperactive creature.
"That's not what I meant," Guy sighed before taking the two briefcases over to the sleeping quarters, separated by a door.
The inside, unsurprisingly, was like the rest of the hotel. A cozy look, with a king-sized bed in the middle, the white comforter accentuated with sewn-in details Guy didn't quite comprehend. It was quiet, at least, for now.
"This... can't be as bad as going there," Guy breathed, putting down the briefcases.
"Guy! Get out here!" Sam exclaimed. "They have everything in this hotel!" Guy poked his head out to see Sam holding a can of green eggs and ham. "Look what I found!"
Guy made a face before responding, "For you're information I am not trying them in a hotel."
"Aww, well. Suit yourself! More for me!" Sam proceeded to open the can and heat it up, humming happily.
"I found the TV by the way," Guy finally said, walking over to the cupboards and searching for oatmeal, or oat toast, anything oat related.
"Really?! Yes!" Sam exclaimed, jumping up happily. "This slumber party is going to be so much more fun with bad movies!" Guy shrugged, although he did agree. Bad movies were fun to just watch and make fun of once in a while.
"I haven't watched a movie with someone in a while," Guy admitted.
"Oh, well that's about to change!" Sam exclaimed before rushing off. "Where's the TV?!"
"With the bed! You can't miss it, Sam," Guy replied. Mr Jenkins came over then and warbled softly. "What is it?"
"Found it!" Sam yelled. "Oh and look! I found some ties!"
"That must be it," Guy said. "You're hungry, that's it, right?" Mr Jenkins squawked and ran in circles before sprinting over to Sam. Guy shook his head, although unable to keep from smiling as he made his way to the bedroom.
"Look at all these movies, Guy! Ooohhh look, they're all sooo bad!" Sam laughed, pulling out multiple movies as Jenkins watched the small man in wonder.
"Stovepipe hotels do have horrible movies in their reservoirs, I can tell you that," Guy replied, finding the ties Sam had mentioned and bringing them over to Jenkins.
"You really seem to know a lot about Stovepipe, Guy. Have you ever visited? Maybe that's why everyone knows you!" Sam exclaimed, thinking he'd cracked the code. Guy cleared his throat awkwardly as he watched the chickeraffe eat his meal.
"Er, yeah, I visited here once. Multiple times," he said softly. Sam looked at Guy, confused by the distance in his speech, before getting startled by his friend pointing to a VHS tape. "I've never seen that one, why don't we watch that?"
"Oh, I've always wanted to watch this one, yes!" Sam exclaimed, picking up the tape and popping it into the VHS player. "This movie is gonna be so bad it's gonna be good!"
"Hopefully so."
As the movie played out, Guy found himself thinking; maybe he should tell Sam the truth about Stovepipe. Maybe later, Guy thought, glancing over at Sam who seemed to be completely entranced by the movie. He then glanced over to the TV. I should give it a watch, I mean, how bad can it be?
By the time the movie ended, Guy was sure he could have fallen asleep.
"Oh wow! That was bad!" Sam exclaimed. "So many predictable plot twists!"
"But you gasped at all of them," Guy pointed out.
"They were so obvious I didn't see them coming!"
"Ah, right. All I can say is; my poor eyes. I want to unsee all that now," Guy groaned.
"I know right," Sam snorted. "It was horrible! But the story could have been so interesting!"
"Yeah, but the antagonist was a little... well," Guy admitted, making a face.
"I agree. Hey Guy, what's up with you and Stovepipe," Sam asked, throwing away the previous subject as if it had never been there. "Every time I ask you, you derail the conversation." The small bug-cat leaned back slightly to pet Mr Jenkins' mane, the chickeraffe having fallen asleep and producing small purr-like snores.
Guy looked down, frowning. "I don't derail conversations."
"Well you change the subject the way a train veers off the rails," Sam said, smiling. He lightly punched Guy's arm. "Come on, briefcase buddy! You know you can tell me anything!"
"I-I know that, Sam!" Guy huffed. "It's just, I don't know, I haven't been here in so long..."
"When was the last time you visited?" Sam asked, smiling encouragingly.
"I wasn't a visitor Sam," Guy sighed. Sam's eyes widened.
"Do you mean... you lived here?" the smaller bud asked quietly, receiving a nod in response. "And your family..?"
"They still live here," Guy sighed.
"Then let's go vi—"
"We're not going to visit," Guy interrupted immediately. "I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want to see me anyways. Especially since... the whole fugitive thing."
"Aww no, don't say that! I'm sure they'd be thrilled to have you home, Guy!" Sam exclaimed, sitting up and bringing his hand from Jenkins' mane to Guy's shoulder. "They're your family, aren't they?"
Guy didn't respond immediately, but eventually he said, "I don't know Sam, they... they think I'm a failure! They're all so successful in life and I'm... well, I can't even make my inventions stop from exploding..."
Sam frowned. "Guy, I don't think so. I'm sure they love you with all their heart! Just because you mess up sometimes doesn't mean you're a failure in their eyes!"
"... I.... suppose so..." Guy said softly.
"Well I'm sure of it," Sam replied confidently. "Have they ever told you they felt like you were a failure?"
"No," Guy admitted, albeit reluctantly.
"Then how can you be so sure! There's no way someone as creative as you can be a failure!" Sam exclaimed. "But, again, how long have you been gone?"
"I dunno, a few years..?" Guy admitted.
"I'm sure they miss you... I mean, I would miss you for sure if we were related and you just up and vanished!.." Sam replied, his smile disappearing as he said the last part. "But hey! What would I know?"
Guy stared at his friend before smiling softly. "Yeah, I guess you're right... maybe we should visit them tomorrow."
"Really?! You mean it?!" Sam exclaimed, his smile returning in an instant.
"I mean, if anything goes wrong, I know my best buddy will be there to help me out," Guy replied. "So why not?" Sam gasped and wrapped his arms around Guy in a bone crushing hug.
"I'm meeting your family!!!" Sam exclaimed. "With your permission!!! And you called me your best buddy!!!"
"Yeah well," Guy chuckled. "I could revoke that thought at any point." Despite that, though, Guy felt... happy. Sam was right. Why would his family think he was a failure if they never said anything about it..? Sam pulled away, smiling at his friend.
"Thank you," he said. "It means so much to me."
"Oh, uh w-well it's not such a big deal, Sam," Guy stammered, looking over to Jenkins.
"Of course it's a big deal!" Sam exclaimed. "It means you trust me enough to have told me this fact about you! And I can't wait to meet your family; oh, I'm sure they're all as amazingly fun as you!"
"Oh, well, I'm not that fun," Guy said. "But my family... they're fun."
"I haven't been in a family setting in such a long time!... I can't even remember the last time... It's gonna be so fun!" Sam exclaimed, cutting himself off. Guy stared at him, confused.
"What about your family? You seem like a family person," Guy said. "You say you haven't been in a family setting in a long time, have you not gone to visit yours?"
"Uh..." Sam trailed off. "O-Of course I've visited them, Guy! Like, I saw my sister last year and uh, I saw my brother a few months back! I just haven't been in a setting where an entire house is filled with family in a while!"
"Oh, well, sorry I assumed, then," Guy apologized. Sam looked at Guy before sighing. Guy had trusted Sam enough to tell him his own problems and worries about his family, maybe he could tell Guy his own..? "Sam?"
"Hmm? Oh, umm, sorry," Sam replied. "I was thinking of happy memories!"
"That frown didn't seem to say 'happy memories'... you sure you're okay?" Guy asked, worry marking his voice. Oh no, he's getting the wrong idea, Sam realized.
"I, uh... it's not what you're thinking," Sam replied. "S'just... your family looks... fun and inviting, meanwhile..."
"Sam..?" It was Guy's turn to place his hand on Sam's shoulder. Sam took a breath; should he say it? Guy certainly wouldn't change his opinion on Sam, that's for sure... right?
"It's just that, your family is something I wish I had," Sam replied, looking up at Guy.
"I'm sure your family is great," Guy said.
"No, Guy, that's just the thing I... never knew my family. I don't know if I have any siblings, I just know my mom left me at an orphanage when I was... really young..." Sam said softly.
"But what about..."
"Everything I said about my mom? That's made up... I can only remember... one thing... she made me breakfast..." Sam said softly before looking up at Guy.
"Green Eggs and Ham..." Guy realized, looking at Sam, who nodded.
"Hers were the best out there. Green, super eggy... so I keep going around and ordering them. Maybe she works some place that makes them!... and I'll find her there..?" Sam said. He was taken aback by arms enveloping him in a hug, and before he knew it he held onto Guy like a lifeline.
"Keep trying Sam," Guy said softly.
"I will. I'll find her, no matter how long it takes," Sam said with a smile. Guy pulled back, placing his hands on Sam's shoulders.
"And I'll help you the entire time." He smiled, and Sam nodded, smiling sadly.
"Thank you, Guy," Sam said softly before sliding off the bed. "I should... go get ready now... we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow with meeting your family, right?"
"Right," Guy replied, standing up. The two buds got ready for the night and slid into bed.
"G'night, Guy," Sam said softly, closing his eyes.
"Good night, Sam. Sleep well," Guy replied before they both drifted off into the mystical land of dreams.
