You look up at the walls of your new house, sighing as a soft smile pulls at your mouth. It was a little chilly, cold air running its fingers through your hair and sneaking its way under the thin cloth of your hoodie. You stand there staring at the house, thinking of what you had left behind and hoped you'd fit in here.
"You alright, hun?" your dad asks from the other side of the car, shutting the door behind him. You look over at him and nod, walking to the back of the car.
"Yeah, I'm okay. I just hope that we'll be better off here." you said, hope lacing your sad words as your dad opened up the trunk, revealing many cardboard boxes that held your belongings. You had moved away from your old home due to unfortunate circumstances.
You and your dad weren't the most normal of people, and everyone in your old town soon knew why. All the things the two of you could do and all of your odd behaviors were subject to questions and you two were trying desperately to hide your secret.
Your mind drifted to that one night. You were out at a party with a few friends, though they weren't close, and everything was too overwhelming. Crazy lights flashed blindingly and sweaty shoving bodies pushed and tugged at you. After you had escaped the loud music and crazy dancers, all very drunk on the alcohol they had brought, an upperclassman had followed you and tried to take advantage of you. At that moment, you were struck by fear and acted out of instinct, swiping a clawed hand at the boy and drawing blood. You remembered the fear flooding his eyes as he covered the scratches on his face, blood dripping through his fingers.
Soon, you and your dad were being called freaks and monsters. It was terrible and you couldn't stay any longer; so you moved. You moved as far as you could into a small town called Nockfell. It was a place with not many people so you hoped you could start a new life here. Just you and your dad.
You shook your head of the memories and started collecting as many boxes as there were, your dad already having grabbed the rest, leaving the trunk completely empty. You weren't worried about anyone noticing how many boxes you were carrying on your own, seeing as it was evening and most people would be inside their homes. The boxes were indeed heavy, and you both were carrying a lot, but to you, it was as if you were holding up a few pillows.
As your dad closed the trunk and headed to the front door, you following behind him, you heard a surprised voice come from behind you,
"How are you two carrying all of that?" Just as shocked, you whipped around to be greeted by two figures. One was tall and lanky and wore a red hoodie, long brown hair spilling down their shoulders. The other was significantly shorter and wore a plain black hoodie and red ripped jeans. Bright blue hair was tied up in two pigtails, which you thought was a rather unique color, but you weren't one to judge and you thought it was fascinating. Then, your eyes lowered down to their face and what you saw, you weren't expecting.
The shorter one had a mask on, it was a pale gray color with a patch of pink stitched on the right side. There were two eye holes in the mask where you could see two sparkling blue eyes staring back from the shadow behind it, one brighter than the other.
You were snapped out of your thoughts when you heard your dad call to you from around the car.
"Are you—oh! Who might you two be? We didn't expect to be getting visitors today." Your dad said as he noticed that you were not behind him and had come to check on you. Shaking your head, you realized that you had been staring at the strangers. Quickly, you put on a soft smile as you peered around the tower of boxes still held in your arms, hoping to make a good first impression on the two.
"Oh, my name is Larry, and this here is my best friend Sal." the taller one spoke first, his voice gruff but friendly. You could smell something odd wafting off him and knew what it was, but decided to leave it be for now.
