Later that day, I stand in front of the little door and crouch down to sit in front of it. I talk to the door like a crazy person. "You'll never win this! Even if you do have the key, you'll never take me alive!" I shout louder than I expected. My mom suddenly walks through the hallway and says, "Coraline, what on Earth are you yelling at?" I shake my head and think about what I should say. "I-" ... "I'm just... yelling at the mouse I saw go under this door... yeah, that's what I was doing," I reassure her. I feel stupid for having such a stupid reply. "Well Coraline, you should take your vitamins. It's almost time for dinner as well so get ready. Dad's cooking mac and cheese and it's hard to mess that up. I hope it's good," Mom says. She crosses her fingers and sighs. "Okay Mom. I love you!" I shout slightly. "I love you too, Darling." ... Darling? I think silently. She never calls me darling... I start to get suspicious but it's probably nothing. I look at the door once more before getting up and sighing anxiously. "I'll never let you in my house. Never!" I whisper at the door. I get up violently and sigh in frustration.I need to go to the well. It's the only way to get the key. But before I do, I need another planchette for seeing through the other world. So I go to Ms. Spink and Forcible's house. I knock on the door and sudden barking comes through the door. I see Angus in his angel outfit. I wonder if he's going to die soon. Ms. Spink opens the door and says, "Oh, Caroline! Welcome, come on in, don't be shy..." she moves out of the way and gestures for me to come in. I walk through the door and make my way to the couch. "Miriam! Put the kettle on!" Ms. Spink shouts. She always says it exactly that way whenever I come over. "Ms. Spink," I begin. "Yes, dear?"
"I would like another one of those planchette's you made me for when my parents went missing. Could you make another one for me?"
"Well, Caroline, I must say, every time we make something from the candy, it comes out different than the last thing. So I can't promise it will be a planchette."
"Okay, whatever will help me. I'm... going on a mission."
"Alright Dear. I'll get on that right now." She grabs the candy from the shelf and her chopsticks that are right next to it and she chops up the candy violently and chants. She pulls out a pentagram attached to a thin chain. She hands it to me and says, "Wear it. It will protect you from evil and you can't die if you're wearing it." I gasp. "That's perfect!" I shout with glee.
I sit at the table for dinner and Dad serves us mac and cheese. "Thank you, Charlie. Coraline, thank your father for dinner," Mom orders me. I'm not stoked about these crispy noodles and rubbery cheese, but I listen to my mother and say, "Thanks Dad. I'm real hungry."
"You're welcome Dearest," Dad replies. Then he begins to sing that ditsy song he always does at dinner. ♪ Oh my twitchy witchy girl! I think you are so nice! I give you bowls of porridge and I give you bowls of ice... CREAM ♪ I keep myself from expressing how gross I think the food is because I am still very much happier to have my parents back. I did everything I could to save them... I just wish they remembered...
I lay awake in my bed with Kitty sitting on the edge of it. I can't sleep. I'm too afraid. I keep tossing and turning until I finally get the courage to close my eyes. That lasts only a second before opening them again. I can't take it... I have to go to the well... I get up waking up Kitty accidentally but I don't care. I grab my yellow rain coat and slip it on. I open the door to my bedroom and leave it cracked. Kitty follows me. I walk quietly down the stairs and as I open the front door, I try my hardest to keep it from creaking. I shut it softly and run to the well as fast as I can. I run through the cold of the night until I reach the well. When I do, I turn to look down at Kitty and I say, "Goodbye Kitty... I'll miss you..." Kitty meows loudly and cries. I begin to cry too. "I'm sorry Kitty! But I have to go!" Kitty rubs against my leg and meows continually. I open the well up and I swing my legs over it. I reach into my pocket and pull out the pentagram necklace. I swing it over my head and pull my hair through it. I sigh the rest of my fear out and slide off the ledge and into the well. The speed that I'm falling at is so intense that my heart is beating out of my chest. I'm having an anxiety attack and I can't help but scream as I fall. Luckily it's not as long of a fall as I thought it was. Right as I fell, I...
