Over 100 years ago humanity was almost irraticated by the upbringing of giant humaniod creatures called titans. These titans were flesh-eating monsters. In a struggle for survival what was left of the human race fled and hid behind walls sent from the Gods to protect them from titans. 3 sectors were created; wall Maria being the outermost wall blocking the titans from getting in, wall Rose being the middle wall sectioning off the lower class in Maria from the upper class behind the final wall, wall Sina. These walls stretched hundreds of miles between each circling around to connect one another. Under wall Sina was the king of humanity. He dictaded that there were to be 3 branches of military. The military police; trained soilders to protect higher officials and set order in jails. The standing gaurd; These soilders were your everyday gaurd, they kept the peace between everyone and sat around drinking on the goverments money. And lastly is the survey corps; These brave soliders were the best of the best, their job was to travel outside the walls to try and discovre new things, ways to kill titans, new lands, if humanity could leave, etc.
We dicovered that titans are not easily killed due to the fact that they only have one weakness, the nap of the neck. If you were to sever or slice the connection from the brain to the spinal cord, it will kill a titan instantly. They don't starve, they dont freeze, the only way to kill them is to climb up them and slice the back of their necks.
This causes major problems as the fact that these titans can grow anywhere from 10 meters tall, to 70 meters tall. Scientests invented a device that every soilder is able to use in combat; the 3 dimensional manuvering gear, also called verticle movement equipment or omni-directional mobility gear. The gear allows the user to fight in a 3D space as opposed to a 2D one. The gear itself takes the form of a body harness that encompasses much of the body below the neck. Although the Gear can grant a skilled user tremendous mobility, it is a demanding art that requires strength, and skill, both of which must be honed through constant practice.
8 years ago in the midst of peace all chaos came raining down. A collasoal titan, that grew larger than wall Maria kicked down the front gate like it was nothing as he watched over the wall. Within minutes 1,000s upon 1,000s of titans came rushing into the city of Shinganshina. Everyone was evacuated as quickly as possible to retreat behind wall Rose. The total population was cut severly that day as the fact that too many people couldnt get out and were eaten or squished by the titans.
After a few days since the retreat people were forced to go back to their homes on the other side and fight the titans that came through. Simple people, farmers, it didn't matter who you were, you were forced to go. 20% of humanities population died that day. 8 years later and children of the time finally graduated school and were able to join basic training, their legion was called the 104th since they were the 104th group of soilders to join the military since the titans appeared 100 years ago. After basic trainging every single individual had to pick 1 of the 3 branches of military. From then on, it was up to their own survival skills in their field of study to distinguish how they spent the rest of their lives.
