"Anna...Anna."
Slowly, I opened my eyes to the blinding ivory light above me.
"Hello sweet girl." She smiled then turned to face someone behind her. "The transfer was successful."
Confusion flooded my brain as I tried to make sense of what was happening. I had no idea where I was or how I had gotten there. My mind was so hazy that even hearing my own name threw me off. Looking down didn't help clarify that.
Why am I tied to a chair?
I lifted my wrists, fighting against the restraints.
"Relax Anna. We'll let you up in a second." She jotted down a few things on her clipboard. "I'm Dr. Winnie by the way. This is Dr. Tarin."
With my vision completely adjusted, I could see Dr. Winnie clearly. I noticed her petite figure and the long blonde strands that pressed against her pale skin. She had a friendly face that had been aged a few years. I could tell from the way the wrinkles lined her eyes when she grinned. The man behind her came to view as well. He didn't look much younger, but his gray eyes and dark hair made up for it.
"How are you feeling?" Dr. Tarin asked.
"Fine, I guess," I answered hesitantly. I continued to analyze the room and frowned at the disappointed view. There were no windows, not even one on the door. Each wall was covered in bleached white and the medical machines resembled them. The otherworldly exterior made me come to a generalization.
"Am I in heaven?" I blurted out. They both laughed. I blushed, glancing down at my bare feet in embarrassment.
"No, but I could see how you would think that." Dr. Winnie grinned. She unstrapped the restraints from my hands before reaching to help me up. "Welcome to Refugi. Your new home."
After steading my balance, I followed her out of the dream like room and into a darkened hallway highlighted by dim fluorescent lights. The doors seemed to stretch for miles until we reached a corridor that lead to a metal gate. Swinging the door open, a man with undistinguishable features ushered me in and slammed it shut. The room resembled the hallway- dark and only visible by the floor bound lights. I sat on the last seat at the end of the left row.
"Welcome," a deep voice boomed out as the screen at the front lit up the room. I could see there were about fifty more people, none of them related of the sort. "If you're watching this, you've made it to Refugi." I glanced up at the screen to find a middle-aged Hispanic man smiling down at me. He looked put together but haunted, like hurt had aged him quicker. I wondered what his story was. "Congratulations, you are about to start a completely new chapter of your life. It is your destiny and you have been chosen. For those of you who are lost and confused, I am Director Morningstar. I've founded this place to make you at home so that you can make Earth a better one.
"About fifty years ago, Earth started its decay. The radiation and nitrogen levels had increased tremendously, causing famine and disease to spread through its crops and people. About 40% of what we knew is gone. Thankfully, about a select few are immune to the new effects of our planet. That select few is you. Through your re-awakening, you were given injections to show where your chakras are overactive and to give you strength in the things you are already powerful in. These new powers will be shown through tests. Once your strength is shown, you will be classified into one of the four: healers, warriors, blenders, and tracers. These new identities will help you adapt to your new world and will help us save humanity as we know it. Now, look under your chair. You should see a card. Grab it."
I, along with fifty other people in the room, did as he said. I pulled a white slip of paper with my name, Anna Orion, and numbers printed on it.
