The Past

As long as I can remember, I've been training. I was the daughter of a King's guard. I never knew my mother. Father never talked about her, so neither did I. He trained me to be a knight at a young age, because he wanted me to follow in his footsteps. I could hold a sword and shield by age four. I could do proper blocks by five. I was running courses by six. He was strict, and kept me on a strict schedule. Up by five, eat and training by six, train until noon, break for lunch, then back at it until supper. By the time I was ten, I was doing the trials to become a recruit for the knight's guild. The trials were fights held by the knight's guild to get recruits. The potential recruits were tasked with taking down a knight recruiter as quick and as efficient as possible. I watched Krys go first. Even at the age of twelve he was able to pick up a fully armored knight and slam him into the ground. Jeni was next, she quickly slid under a knight's legs and and took him down quickly.

Then, I was the last potential recruit. I had my sword and shield ready. I started it off with a shield bash, then quickly swiped with my sword. His armor blocked most of the hit, but the damage was done. He staggered back and I kicked his leg out from underneath him and pointed my blade at his throat. "And that's that," The commander said, then addressed the trainees, "Welcome to the guild!" Krys and Jeni sat next to me, one on each side. "I saw your style. I like it. I'm Jeni and this is Krys." Jeni explained, a smile plastered on her face, Krys just nodded at me.

Three years of training, getting closer to Krys and Jeni, more training, even a war rumor. After three years of training together, I couldn't deny it anymore. I had feelings for Jeni, and I was afraid of them. I've always only seen man and woman together, plus the threat of execution at any little crime, I couldn't risk anything. Then one day I was sitting in the mess hall, reading a letter from Father, when Jeni sat next to me, like she usually does, but this time she sat closer to me. "Sooooo Robyn..." Jeni started, giving me a sly smile, "we need to talk." I just looked at her, my mind going a mile a minute. "Finish your breakfast and meet me in the training grounds," She told me.

It took me five minutes to finish eating. I couldn't stop thinking about the possibilities. 'What could she want to talk about?' I kept thinking. I couldn't get it out of my head. I made it to the training grounds in record speed to see Jeni, flipping her blade, and looking the other way. I walked up to her and was about to tap her on the shoulder when she quickly turned around and kissed me. I couldn't process what just happened. She looked me in the eyes, blushing heavily. I didn't say anything, I just kissed her back.

A year later, we were nearly thrown out of the castle. We got caught hiding in storage rooms, attics, basements, Hell, even the dungeon once. We didn't care. We were in love, at least for the moment, but when we got called for our first fight together things got put into perspective. We thought we had the drop on a group of bandits. We were sneaking up when one snapped to look at us and fired a crossbow bolt, hitting Jeni. I immediately rushed them, shield still on my back, sword in both hands. I couldn't think, all I knew was that they needed to pay. Then it felt like I hit an invisible wall. I fell back, and looked up. There was a man in a cloak, holding out his hand, a calm look on his face. "Alri, they're kids," The crossbowman said. The cloaked man looked at him, then to us. "I can feel your destiny child. We will meet again," He said sternly, looking me in the eyes. "I'll kill you for hurting her!" I yelled at him. He turned and took a step before turning into a swarm of insects. The bowman just looked around, "What about me?" He yelled into the air. I stood up. "You. You shot her." I said, hatred and rage visible in my eyes. He began putting another bolt in his crossbow. I headbutted him, knocking him down. "You're real lucky the commander wants anybody we find. Otherwise I'd make what you did look like a tickle," I said, standing over him, my sword pointed against his throat. Krys walked over and kicked him in the head. "She'll be fine, as long as we get 'er back to town," Krys said gruffly, looking back at Jeni, who was lying on the ground in pain.

When Jeni was back on her feet, we both decided we couldn't get too serious about our emotions. It would be too dangerous, especially if we fought together. I put all three of us at risk. Years later and we all can hold our own in fights, even if we're injured.
