Nearly halfway through the spell, the dust in the room began to churn, and before long it was whipping around the two of us. Soon, the only thing I could see was the book, and Destin had disappeared behind the blanket of dust.
Finally, I finished my incantation. As the dust began to thin and settle I saw Destin kneeling on the floor looking at his upturned palms. He stood and slowly raised his eyes to look at me. With a smirk, he said victoriously, “It worked.”
I squealed and threw my arms around him. Or rather, through him. Wait, what? After I drew back and extended my hand to touch his face, but my hand only passed through his face. I retracted my arm and stared at my hand.
“No.” I said in horror. “No!” I felt a knot build in my throat until I could no longer breathe. Choking, I began to sob as I continued to gape at my hand. My hand was transparent! “You tricked me! You knew all along what would happen! How-how could you?”
His smirk only grew into a twisted grin and he turned and began to ascend the stairs.
“So everything you said about loving me was a lie? Destin, why? Why?!” I screamed at his back, wanting nothing more than for him to leave, but silently begging him to just stay. He never even turned to answer me. He never even gave a backward glance. He just turned the basement doorknob and walked away, leaving behind a girl destroyed by grief, her heart bleeding with sorrow.
I hugged my transparent knees, and whimpered. How could I be so stupid? How could I not have seen those looks, the way he hesitated to confess his love, the looks in his beautiful eyes, were an indication of how he truly felt? Suddenly, rage struck me. I raced upstairs, through the basement door in time to see him exiting my front door. I flew at him, but when I arrived at the front door, it was as if there was a transparent wall keeping me from leaving. “Destin!” I screamed after his retreating figure. “Please, Destin, no! DESTIN!” I pounded on the invisible wall screaming his name. The house lights flickered and went out. “DESTIN!” He turned onto the sidewalk. “DESTIN!” I pushed against the wall, but it refused to budge. “DESTIN!” He disappeared behind the trees lining the sidewalk as I screamed his name one last time. But it was all in vain.
Destin was never coming back.
