Chapter 1
A stern-looking woman entered a room of six sleeping boys and girls, "UP! Everyone up! Today is a very busy day!" she exclaimed; her French accent strong.
The children all woke with a start, one girl with long brown hair and shining green eyes was already wide awake, dressed in her plain Hogwarts uniform and reading Hogwarts, A history on the window seat.
"Madame Ettie!" the young girl leaped to her feet and ran to the stern woman, "I am so excited to go to Hogwarts and see the giant squid and the ghosts and-"
"Miss Aris, please contain yourself" the young girl looked to the floor, "You will be collected shortly, have you packed?"
The young girl nodded and ran back to her bed, uncovering a trunk that would hardly close. Madame Ettie shook her head, "No no no! Mila there is a library there please unpack all the books apart from the ones on your school list"
Pouting, Mila began to pull out the extra books she had packed, the other children laughed at her. "Such a nerd" they muttered, causing Mila's cheeks to go bright red.
She was excited to leave the orphanage; she was the only child who had never been adopted many children had come and left but not Mila. She was born to a now disgraced family; her parents had been death eaters and fled after He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named fell from power, they left her on the doorstep of the orphanage in France on a cold rainy night, she was blue by the time Madame Ettie discovered her early the next morning.
Now she had come of age to attend a wizarding school Madame Ettie had decided it was probably best that she attended Hogwarts over Beauxbatons, the girls in the town they lived despised Mila and Madame wanted her to have friends.
"To the washrooms! Then breakfast" Madame strictly told the other children, as two tried to escape downstairs.
Mila's trunk managed to close properly now she was an extra ten books down; Madame had developed a soft spot for her and when the other children had left for breakfast sat down on the bed beside her.
"Professor Dumbledore is sending one of the other Professors to collect you, I think his name is Professor Snape" Mila nodded her eyes on the floor and her face still slightly pink from the teasing of the other children. "And I have a surprise for you"
Mila's head shot up in excitement, "A surprise? For me?"
Madame nodded, reached into her robes and pulled out a tiny white kitten who was fast asleep. Mila squealed as Madame handed her the kitten, "Her name is Suki, and she is to keep you company whilst you are at Hogwarts"
Mila thanked Madame plenty as she stroked the tiny ball of fluff in her arms, "Now, we must get your trunk down the stairs Professor Snape will be here any minute"
With a wave of her wand a cat carrier appeared on top of Mila's trunk, Madame took the kitten from Mila's arms and secured her safely in the carrier. With another flick of her wand, Mila's luggage had disappeared from the room and from the loud 'clunk' and gasps of shock from the kitchen she knew her luggage was in downstairs.
Professor Snape appeared at 10:00 am, just as Madame had returned from seeing the other children off, "Ah, you must be Professor Snape!"
The man that appeared was dressed completely in black, with greasy black hair that came to his shoulders, jet black eyes and a hooked nose. He nodded slightly in respect, "Madame Ettie, Dumbledore has sent me to collect-"
"Yes, yes Miss Aris is right here" Madame pointed to the girl who was hidden behind the book Hogwarts, A History again.
Mila slowly lowered the book, the man looked down an unreadable expression upon his face. "Hello, Professor Snape" she mumbled quietly.
"Where is your luggage?" he asked getting impatient.
"Here" Mila pointed to the trunk and carrier right beside her.
"Goodbye Mila! Write to me at least once a month" Madame called out as Snape grabbed one side of the trunk, Mila followed his actions and grabbed the other side.
"I will, goodbye Madame-" she began but was cut off when she began whirling, she was no longer in the kitchen of the orphanage, although she couldn't place where she was now either.
Suddenly they stopped spinning, Mila grabbed her head still feeling as if she was spinning, and slowly looked around. She was surrounded by muggles, all bustling and shoving through the crowds, some even running towards trains their arms waving as they shouted at the train to 'wait'.
"Now, Miss Aris follow me I will show-"
"Professor Snape?"
"Yes" he drawled, growing impatient of being interrupted.
"Sorry to interrupt, but what subject do you teach at Hogwarts?"
Snape looked baffled, "Potions"
"I knew it!" she exclaimed, gaining some funny looks from the muggles around them.
Snape grabbed her upper arm and they pulled her forwards, the trunk dragging along the floor with the cat carrier tied to the top. "You're the best at teaching potions, Madame told me that you were the best in your year whilst you attended Hogwarts. She enquired about all the teachers and how good they were at their subjects from Dumbledore"
For a moment Mila could have sworn she saw a smile form on Snape's face, but it was gone before she could blink.
"No one likes a know-it-all Miss Aris"
"Oh, I didn't mean to show off-"
"Follow me and don't think panic" he stated.
Mila was confused by his words until they were walking straight into a brick wall, "B-" she didn't even manage to get her words out as they had passed through the wall unharmed.
"Listen carefully, you are to place your trunk over there with the rest of them and then you are to board the train and sit in a compartment, I am to leave you now but I will see you at the sorting ceremony"
"Thank you!" she called out as he disappeared back through the wall.
It was 10:20 am and Mila hurriedly dropped her trunk off with the others, she hesitated to leave Suki when an older student approached her. "First-year?"
She nodded.
"You leave your pets with your trunk this year, they will be up in your dormitory once you're sorted and next year, they'll be allowed to sit on the train with you"
"Oh, thank you for the help"
The student nodded and turned around to greet old friends, Mila jumped onto the train her excitement building, she found an empty compartment and made herself comfortable.
Not long had passed when a girl with long blonde hair knocked on the compartment door, "Hi, can I sit with you? Everywhere else is getting really busy"
"Of course," Mila smiled, "I'm Mila Aris"
"I'm Astrid Notts, nice to meet you Mila"
The girls chatted and laughed, both showed excitement to be joining Hogwarts.
"You're French how come you're not joining Beauxbatons?" Astrid asked curiously, the train had left the station several hours ago and Mila knew the question had been playing on Astrid's mind.
"I wasn't born in France; I was born in London but my parents left me in an orphanage in France and I wanted to go to the school they were taught in" she smiled sadly.
"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to sound nosey" Astrid looked flustered as she struggled to get her words out.
Mila laughed, "No, you don't need to apologise. I have a French accent, but I cannot speak it for the life of me!"
Astrid joined in laughing, and for once Mila felt comfortable around another person her age.
