I could feel myself falling off the cliff. I was screaming but couldn't hear anything.
"Sophie, wake up. It's just a dream."
I took a deep breath and sat upright; my face covered in sweat. My brother, Rob was sitting next to me with a look of worry on his face.
"What did you see?" he asked
"The same dream of me falling off a cliff." I had been having the same dream for a year now.
"Do you think it means something?"
"I don't know. It's not like I'm afraid of heights. Was I screaming?"
"Yes, no one else is awake though. You weren't that loud."
It was usually Rob who would wake me up whenever I had nightmares cause his room was right next to mine.
"Do you want me to sleep next to you tonight?" he asked.
"No, I'm fine." I said giving him the most reassuring smile that I could manage to give.
"You sure?"
I nodded. He kissed my forehead and left the room. I was tired of feeling the way that I felt whenever I saw that dream. It wasn't just the fear of me falling, there was something else, something that I wasn't able to point out because I didn't know what the dream meant.
The next morning was the same as always, my sister Jade whining about something, dad reading the newspaper, mom making breakfast and Rob had already left for college. Rob was 2 years elder to me and Jade was 4 years younger. I was closer to Rob than Jade. He understood me maybe because he was the elder one. Jade was still a kid and I loved her, but we didn't get along all the time. It had just been 3 months since we moved here to New Orleans from Jackson. I did manage to make a few friends but was most comfortable with only one that was Briana. Back home I had two best friends Tricia and Alex. Tricia had feelings for Alex but never confessed because she thought it would ruin their friendship. Finally, they were going on a date this Saturday. I finished breakfast, grabbed my bag and stepped out of the house to wait for the school bus. Jade got late as always since she waits till the last minute to pack her bag.
The day was long and boring as usual but it was a Friday so I could finally go home lay down on my bed and read my book while drinking hot chocolate. That was my favorite thing to do.
"Have you started the Math homework?" Briana asked me.
"No, I totally forgot about that." I groaned.
"Well, we do have that English essay as well."
Goodbye weekend plans. What is the point of having a weekend if I must sit at home and do homework? As soon as I got home, I got a text from Tricia saying that she wanted to video chat. We both promised to video chat at least once a week. I went upstairs to my bedroom,
"Hi." Tricia said with a huge smile on her face.
"Hi. How are you?"
"I'm good. What about you?"
"I'm good too and as I can see you can't wait to give me details about what exactly happened between you and Alex and neither can I so please go ahead."
"Well he said he would like to take me out on a date sometime that's it. Nothing much I haven't told him that I've had a crush on him for a while now. Anyway, tell me what's going on at your end. How's Briana?"
"She's fine. I have two assignments to complete over the weekend so that's all I can think of right now."
"It's your 18th birthday next week don't you have anything planned?"
"Nah I don't know. It sucks that you're not gonna be here."
"Mhmm."
"That's weird." I said looking at my window
"What is?"
"My window is open. I never keep my window open." I said getting up to close it.
"Maybe Jade came to your room and left it open. I gotta go I'll let you know about Saturday. See you next Friday."
"You're gonna wait till my birthday to talk to me next?"
"Uhhh yeah that's what I meant."
"Alright buh-bye."
I went downstairs to get some water. I was hungry, but my mom would kill me if I had some junk now and skipped dinner. I decided that I would start my homework from tomorrow. Yes procrastinate 101. Who am I even kidding I'm going to start the essay Sunday night and probably do math in school. I headed back upstairs to my room to watch something on Netflix. My window was open again. I headed straight to Jades room slightly annoyed
"Can you stop leaving my bedroom window open?" I said while giving Jade a stern look.
"I didn't do anything." She said with a look of obliviousness on her face.
"Sure." I said rolling my eyes.
Once Rob and dad were back home, we had dinner. After helping my mom clean up, I went back to my room to continue the movie I was watching.
I gasped and sat upright; I didn't know when I fell asleep. I saw the same dream again but this time I saw something more something that I have never seen in those dreams before. I saw a girl my age or just a little older standing at the edge of the cliff smiling as she watched me fall. I was finding it hard to breathe like I usually do whenever I have these dreams. Rob wasn't in my room that means I didn't scream today. I got off my bed to go turn on the lights and noticed that the window was open again.
