My Dog Kayla And Me

Chapter 1 The Very Begining

Chavez's POV I'll never forget it that day changed me forever I was in town with John getting some supplies for the ranch I was standing outside John's store when I decided to look around I walked past the old ragged barn on the edge of Lincoln it was the same barn that I found Chivato or Billy as everybody knows him now he had been staying with John and the rest of us the Regulators for a few months now as I walked past the barn I heard a noise coming from there so I decided check it out I walked in and there he was he was huddled in a corner whining and shivering in the cold it was cold out that day I felt bad for the little one he looked he had been through a lot when he saw me he backed up whimpering I put my hand out trying to reassure him that I wasn't going to hurt him I kneeled down and slowly offered my hand out to him he looked at me curiously he walked over and nuzzled my hand then licked it and I petted him as he licked my hand I smiled softly proud of myself but it didn't last long because I noticed that he had blood all over him and cuts and scratches on him as well and that's when I realized that he had been abused by someone he had been beaten almost severely I picked him up and carried him to the vet we have a vet thank god his name was Dr James Wagner I walked into Dr. Wagner's office he was busy at first looking through some papers when he saw me he looked baffled at first

Oh hello Jose "what do you have there? Dr Wagner asked while greeting us

Dr Wagner I found this pup in that old ragged barn and I was wondering if you could take a look at him make sure he's okay I answered walking into veterinary clinic still holding the pup in my arms

Certainly bring him around back Dr. Wagner said

We walked into the back of the veterinary clinic there was a large table in the front of the room I set the pup on the table Dr. Wagner advised that I hold the pup so he wouldn't try and run off or anything I gently held the pup in my hands I had him focus his attention on me so he wouldn't get scared Dr. Wagner examined him and told me that he would be alright that he just a couple of cuts and scratches on him

Well he's expected to make a good recovery although I'm not sure what type of breed he is Dr. Wagner said

I know what type of breed he is he's an Alaskan Malamute I said

How did you know Jose? Dr .Wagner asked

I've been around dogs all my life I know what type of breeds there is I said

Right I forgot who I was talking to Dr Wagner chuckled realizing that he was talking to a young man who grew up on an Indian Reservation

He seems to trust you Jose seems like he might even pick you as his owner Dr. Wagner said

Yeah I suppose you're right Dr. Wagner "but could you please keep him here at least just for tonight until I can figure out what to with him? I asked

Well I don't see why not "but do you not want him? Dr. Wagner asked worriedly

No no I do but I'm not sure how John would react to having a dog on the ranch especially a dog of this type of breed I just want to make sure he's going to be alright and I can't leave him out in that old barn it's too cold outside for him I'm just trying to do the right thing that's all Dr. Wagner I'll come back in the morning to check on him I said

Okay I'll let him stay here tonight "do you want me to put him in his cage? Dr. Wagner asked

No it's fine I can do that I said

As I finished my sentence the little malamute pup ran and jumped up onto my right leg barking and spinning around trying to get my attention Dr. Wagner and I looked down at him and chuckled I reached down and he jumped up into my arms and held him as well as petting him

He seems to love you he probably thinks you're his owner I think you would be a great owner for this little guy Dr. Wagner said Petting the pup

You think so? I asked

Why of course you pretty good with dogs you know besides you grew up around dogs on an Indian Reservation so I would say that yes you would a be the best owner for this little pup Dr. Wagner replied

Well I never really thought about having a dog especially after what happened two winters ago I said trying not to choke up

Dr. Wagner saw how hard I was trying not to cry he gave me a reassuring look he knew it was difficult for me having just lost my entire family thanks to Murphy&Dolan's negligence I was able to calm down and everything went back to being okay for me

Have you thought of a name for this little guy yet Jose? Dr. Wagner asked

Yeah I think I have "what do you think of the name Kayla? I answered looking up at Dr. Wagner

That's a pretty good name Jose I like it Dr. Wagner replied

Okay Kayla it is then I said

Okay let's get this little guy settled in for the night Dr. Wagner said

I walked into the back of veterinary clinic there were rows of kennels mostly for boarding when their owners go on vacations I reached the end of the row of kennels I opened up the kennel door and placed Kayla in then I kneeled down to his level he was really hyper I smiled and chuckled softly he reminded me of my mother's dog white warrior because his coat was white as snow Kayla reminded me so much of him he barked and yelped in excitement

Okay okay calm down Kayla easy now okay you're going to stay here tonight it's just for tonight don't worry I'll come back in the morning to check on you okay I said getting up and beginning to close the kennel door

as I was closing the door to his kennel he started whining and whimpering I looked back at him with a sad look on my face I hated having to leave him there but I had no choice I kneeled down in front of him trying to calm him down I told him that it was only for tonight and that I would come back in the morning to check on him I knew he was scared so I took off my jacket and placed it with him I had brought an extra jacket in case

Here use my jacket for tonight I said taking it off and placing it around him

I know that my jacket would calm him down because it had my scent on it and that's what he was wanting he wanting to feel closer towards me I wrapped my jacket around him to keep him calm and warm once my jacket was around him he settled down and laid down while yawning then he fell asleep I smiled softly and petted his head gently then I quietly closed his kennel door and left the veterinary clinic and met back up with John by the time I got back to his store it was time for him and I to go home after we arrived home it was time for dinner after that it was time for bed before I went to bed I thought about I was going to raise Kayla I didn't know how everybody would feel about him being here I thought about hiding him but I knew that wouldn't work I thought about maybe putting him somewhere where nobody knows about him "but where? "In the woods? Nah that couldn't work then I thought I put him in a cave for the time being at least until I can figure out if everybody would love him or not I thought about everything for awhile until I finally fell asleep
