Chapter 6 A True Loyal And Protective Friend

Chavez's POV: today was another day living on John's ranch John had decided to take all of us into town he needed to check on his general store and make sure everything was in order I decided to head to the saloon with several of the other boys including Chivato I had run into a old friend of mine from when I grew up on The Red Sands Reservation his name was Buck Cross he works as a pony express rider now I met his friend Ike McSwain the poor kid Ike lost his hair and voice to scarlet fever I was able to communicate with Ike through sign language Buck had to help translate what Ike was saying so I knew what he was saying I also met a couple of Buck's other friends including Kid Moragan his fiancé Lou McCloud William F. Cody or Cody for short and Jimmy Hickok and Noah Dickson they all seemed like they would be good friends we ran into Lucas McCain and his son Mark they moved here from North Fork Mark and Ike seemed to love Kayla I stood outside the saloon watching them play

How long have you had Kayla Chavez? Mark asked curiously

Oh I've had him for over a year now he seems to love you and Ike though I answered

Yeah he does Mark added smiling and having a good time with Ike and Kayla

As I stood there watching Kayla play with Ike and Mark Buck came out and stood beside me

if only our families could see us now Buck said

I'm sure they're seeing us just fine Buck I told him patting him gently on the back chuckling softly

We stood there for Pat Garrett came over to say hi to us we were glad to have Pat Garrett and Sam Cain as well came over to say hi I was feeling happy to around friends everything went well until some of those Murphy&Dolan boys showed up along with Murphy and Dolan themselves I was at the bar getting a drink Kayla was right beside me as I stood there getting a drink while I was waiting a young man came over he was tall about my height to say the least he wasn't Mexican or Indian though he had long brown hair and had a beard he walked towards me and Kayla at first I didn't see him it wasn't until I heard Kayla growling that I realized that he was there Kayla is usually good at making friends but he could sense if someone is not trustworthy and if someone is not trustworthy he doesn't want to be their friend and becomes protective of me

Easy Kayla it's okay I said petting him trying calm him

Nice dog I could use him for things the man said

Well I'm not selling him if that's what you're thinking Mister I said take a shot of my drink

Just name your price for the dog he said

I'm not because I'm not selling him he's mine I've raised him since he was a pup so just leave it alone I told him

I took my last shot then went to sit by the boys and the pony express riders as well as Lucas and Mark McCain as I turned the man grabbed my wrist I looked back at him then looked down and saw that he had my wrist we looked at each other in the eye I glared at him and he glared back at me everybody stopped at what they were doing everything Chivato and the rest of the Regulators and pony express riders and Lucas and Mark McCain stopped and stared at us it was quiet for a moment Kayla was staring at the man who had my wrist in his hand Kayla was ready he was going to take that man for sure Kayla is very very protective of me and very very territorial around me I looked at Kayla for a minute then back at the man who had my wrist

You either sell me that dog or I'll have to kill you to get that pretty little Alaskan Malamute from you the man who I finally learned was name Amaro said

Forget it he's not for sale I told him getting irritated

I tried to get away from him and that's when he pulled out his six shooter and aimed at me and that's when Kayla jumped in growling barking and attacked Amaro and knocked me to the ground the two fall to the ground with Kayla attacking him everybody was frozen in shock

Kayla no I shouted worriedly

I managed to pull Kayla off and held him back keeping him from attacking again he was jumping around growling and barking aggressively trying to get at him for what he tried to do to me I struggled to hold Kayla back I had to kneel down beside him and hold him to my chest

Kayla it's okay it's okay calm down easy I said trying to calm him down

It took a little bit but he finally calmed down I stood up holding onto Kayla's collar and looking at Amaro with a glaring look on my face and Kayla barking and growling showing his teeth at Amaro

I'll see to it that I get that dog you'll see I'll make turn on you if I have to Amaro yelled as he was being thrown out of the saloon

Everything went back to the way it was I decided to head home with Kayla I knew Kayla was tired and so was I we arrived home went into the bunkhouse got ready for bed but when I went to climb into bed Kayla wasn't there like he usually is I looked over and saw Kayla standing near my bedroom door just staring at it

"Kayla? "Kayla what's wrong boy? I asked worriedly

He turned to look at me and I could tell he was scared he whined softly so I walked over towards him kneeling down in front of him petting him

You wouldn't turn on me would you Kayla? I asked thinking that was what he worried about

He looked at me and licked my face I chuckled softly petting him I knew he wouldn't turn on me I knew that the moment I saw him a year ago

That's my boy come on let's go to bed come on I said getting up and walking towards my bed as I climbed into bed Kayla happily jumped up onto my bed and curled up next to me like he always did I blew out the candle that sat on my bedside table and fell into a deep restful sleep with Kayla by my side I knew that Kayla would never turn on me that's how loyal and protective he is and I knew that from the bottom of my heart that we would together until the spirit horse comes which would be a very very long time from now
