2018 – Namsoon
I was hoping to hear from JoongKi but not expecting to. Imagine my surprise when the VIP line lit up. I only have one VIP, so I excused myself from the little get-together KangJoo and Misaki are holding to take his call.
I locked myself in their guest room and made sure I was alone. I needed the space and quiet to get into the role of Soo Min, my alter ego.
The call was nice. Our conversation reminded me that New Year's the time to make nice with family regardless. After he hung up, I switch to my home security app on my phone to check on my father. I see my father in his favorite chair watching television. Ajumma is cooking and someone has decorated the house. I bet it's Ajumma. There's a young lady in the kitchen helping her cook. They look like they are having fun. I see my father glance at them every so often.
I call my father. Ajumma answers.
"Good evening Ajumma, how are you?"
"Very well, Go Namsoon," she replies. No matter how many times I asked her to call me Namsoon, she reverts to Go Namsoon every time.
"How's my father?"
"He is doing well. Before I give the phone to him, I just want to let you know that my daughter is spending the holidays with me. You had told me that it was okay for her to visit. I hope it's still okay?"
"Of course, Ajumma. I hope you are having a good time. Please wish her a happy New Year for me, and the same to you too."
"Thank you. Happy New Year. I'll give the phone to your father."
"Ahbuhjee, Happy new year," I greet him when he gets on the phone.
"Happy New Year."
"How are you?"
"Fine."
"Ah, how are things with Ajumma?"
"Fine."
"Any plans to visit friends?"
"No."
"Ajumma will take you if you need to go somewhere."
"I am not a child, I can find my way to wherever I want to go."
"Okay, Ahbuhjee."
At least he said more than one word this time.
"I'll talk to you soon. I'm staying in Japan an extra week so if you need anything Ajumma has my contact number."
"Bye."
"Bye Ahbuhjee and Happy New Year."
He hangs up! Why do I even bother?
I walk back to the living room and sit down beside KangJoo. Their living room is decorated in bright lights. There's a string of Christmas lights still up.
Their friends seem nice and are welcoming to me. The mood is very festive and music plays in the background, soft enough to compliment the atmosphere but not overwhelm our conversation. I have picked up a few Japanese phrases since I started school but not enough to hold a conversation. I'm just glad KangJoo's friends are speaking English.
I love sushi. It's now running a close second to my love of ramen. Japanese sushi is in a world of its own. I have never seen this many variations of sushi in my life. The layout at this party is eye-opening to me but not to the locals.
