"Do you believe in things you can't see?"
"No. If it can't be seen or proven to exist, then why waste your life hoping it does, only to be disappointed in the end?" I watched her for a moment.
"What about love? Or God? The imaginary, or unproven gives us the capacity to make the world what we see."
"Imagine being able to see your life from start to finish. Would you not change what caused you pain?"
"Are you saying you don't believe in love because it has the potential to hurt you?"
"Exactly."
"But if you were to allow each setback to hurt you, would you not end up with a more painful life in the end? One of constantly avoiding what could cause you pain? Fear comes from having something to lose. It's healthy to fear pain, but not to neutralize it from your life."
"What are you claiming exactly?"
"What if you could see your entire life, but not in order?"
"A non linear timeline? Is that how your mind works?"
"Exactly like that."
"How? Have you had any studies done? This is extraordinary, being able to see the future, it could change everything."
"See, even you do it. When given a scenario that could be a lie, you choose to believe it is true."
"Did you lie?"
"No."
"You are incredible. Do you realize what you are even doing?"
"I'm using what I need to, so I can show you the world through my eyes. I know my future and my past, each detail in a skewed order of pain and triumphs."
"Am I in your life?"
"Only if you choose to be."
"Do you want me to be?"
"More than anything."
…
"Are you here baby? Come back to me now, right here my love." Fingers comb through my hair and I blink, my mind back in the present.
"Sorry."
"Where were you?" I gaze out at the water.
"Canada."
"With who?"
"You."
…
"Mommy!" I gaze down at the child in my arms, "Look fish!" Bright schools swirl around our feet, their color making the water dance.
"What do you think Layal?"
"They're pretty."
…
"She passed in the night. It was painless." I looked down at my lovers body, wrinkled on the outside from time, but still perfect and young in her soul.
"Only painless for her."
...
"Are you back?" I rub my eyes taking a few deep breaths.
"Sorry."
"Your mind is a little crazy today."
"I know." I let my fingers drift across her stomach.
"What?"
"If we had a baby, and it was a girl, what would her name be?"
...
"She's beautiful."
"Just like her mother."
"I love you."
…
"Do you want to have a baby with me?"
"Of course."
"What do we name her?"
"Layal."
"That's beautiful." I smile up at her from my head's position on her lap.
"You came up with it. I had no clue, and you said we should pick one that showed what I saw. It's a palindrome, the same forward and backwards."
"How did I come up with it if you're telling me now?"
"Maybe I forget between now and then."
…
"What was that? You disappeared for a minute there."
"Just a memory."
"Of?"
"Our first kiss."
…
"It's time my love. I'm leaving now."
"I'm not ready."
"Life has taken it's time with me. I've had more than I could ever ask for."
"But I love you."
"Exactly."
...
That's when I gave in, letting the pulling, twisting need guide my lips to hers. She met my kiss with a rushing hunger, a need parallel to mine. Her arms twined around my lower back, pulling me tightly against her. I lost sensation of time, of anything but her.
…
"Lexi? Let's get married. I want to spend forever with you."
"You already know what I'm going to say."
"That doesn't mean I don't want to hear it."
"Yes."
…
The train rumbled to a stop and I stood, ready to get off. The car was crowded and as I walked, others jostled me around. I collided with a figure in front of me and reached out to stop her fall. As I looked up I met a gaze that my heart knew inside and out, though I had never laid eyes on her before.
"I'm so sorry." I looked at the papers swirling around us as the doors opened, "Let me help you." She held out her hand.
"I'm Lexi."
"Nice to meet you."
