Shattered

Troops of soldiers march in the pouring rain

Just waiting for oncoming death

Each man’s heart beats unsteadily

As they prepare to draw their last breath

The deafening noise of gunshots

Pierces the early morning silence

So many young lives are shattered

So much unnecessary violence

Bodies lay limp like potato sacks

Soaked and covered in mud

Their once green army uniforms

Are stained by dirt and blood

Their marble graves lay row on row

Each name chiselled on separate stones

And the grey clouds weep crystal rain

Upon their sacred bones

These men fought regardless of weather

Left all their mothers and wives

For the good of their country and people

Knowing it could cost their lives.
