The music in the car was so loud I was surprised that Fitz was able to keep his focus on the road. We were piled into Edaline's minivan so that all of us could fit into just one car. I was sitting in back with Keefe and Dex, and Biana was jamming out in the passenger seat. We had decided to hit the city for a trivia night at our favorite pizza place, so nothing too crazy.
Fitz parked the car and paid the parking meter. We all piled out of the car, still loudly singing the music that had been playing in the car. Keefe threw his arms around my neck and Dex's, literally pulling us into the song as he rocked back and forth. We laughed and sang along. Keefe dramatically let us go and took my hand, spinning me.
We were regulars at the family owned pizzeria so the staff waved and welcomed us when we walked in. Marella, a waitress we knew well, quickly pulled two tables together and we thanked her and plopped down around the table.
When the trivia whiteboards came around we divided ourselves into teams. As we were debating who would be with who, Dex snatched a board from the center of the table and announced that we wanted to go solo.
"I call teaming with Fitz!" Biana shouted, scooting closer to her brother.
"No fair, he's the only other smart kid!" Keefe wined,
"Guess you two dumbs are stuck with each other!" Biana said, shrugging like she had no other choice.
We armed ourselves with our boards and prepared for the first question. The trivia was split into three rounds: History, geography, and geeky. The first round began.
"Which seven US states seceded and formed the original confederacy during the US Civil War?"
Keefe and I watched Dex and Fitz scribble away at their boards before glancing at each other, both of us clueless.
"Tennessee is all sorts of confederate now, surely it has to be one of the seven?" Keefe suggested.
"Try again, team dumb!" Dex called, overhearing him.
We ended up writing down seven random states, only getting three right and not getting the point like the other two teams at our table.
A few more questions passed, Keefe and I remained point-less but added up a list of things that we learned.
- King George the eighth did not have three wives
- The first space shuttle to go into space was not called Apollo
- Alcatraz was not the infamous prison stormed on July 14, 1789.
Although, we did know that Abraham Lincoln was the president during the civil war!
The first section ended with Team Dex and Team Vacker tied for first place in the joint at 9 points and Team Dumb pulling up the rear with a whopping two points. The next round, geography, began.
"What is the oldest city in the united states?"
The sound of markers squeaking echoed through the pizzeria, Keefe set down our board in defeat. At the end of the round Dex and Fitz had 17 each and Keefe and I had six. The judges announced that the last round was going to have 15 questions.
"We might as well get an uber home," I sighed.
"I want to see who wins between Team Nerd and Team Dork," Keefe said, motioning to Dex and Fitz.
"in The Legend of Zelda video game serios, what is the hero's default name and what about his horse?"
Dex and Fitz both eagerly scribbled a word and then paused, glancing up at each other.
Keefe glanced between them and slowly picked up the white board. He wrote down an answer and sat back in his chair, watching the other two teams puzzle over the question.
The judge picked the mic up to announce the answer, "Link, who rides Epona!"
As both other boys sighed and wiped their boards, Keefe grinned and angled the board so I could see his correct answer. He subtly added a point to our count.
Keefe added point after point to our board. The captain of the enterprise in the pilot episode of star trek was named Captain Pike, SNES stands for super Nintendo entertainment system, the company that created Skynet was Cyperdyne Systems, Star Trek originally aired in 1987!
The round ended and the judges asked for the highest scores, Dex and Fitz raised their board to display their respective 18 and 19. It seemed like Dex was about to take the win when Keefe raised his board, showing the judges his 21 point score. Team Dork and Team Nerd gaped as the waitress brought Keefe and I our free deserts. Keefe smugly ate his fudge brownie.
"If we're Team Nerd and Team Dork than you are most certainly Team Geek." Biana teased.
"If that means we get free dessert, I'll gladly take the title," I responded.
We paid for our pizza, thanked the staff, and headed out. We started walking the block or so back to where our car was parked. I was lagging just a bit behind the rest of the group but before I could catch up to the others, a man lurched in front of me.
"Excuse me miss, you're looking very nice tonight," he leaned in a little too close for comfort and whispered so that my friends didn't hear him. I didn't know what to say so I smiled, thanked him, and tried to step around him. He moved to block me again.
"Can I get your number?" he whispered again, this time moving even closer but speaking a little louder.
I didn't know what to say so I blurted, "I have a boyfriend,"
"Oh? Where is he then?" the man started to sound angry, "I don't see him anywhere!"
"He's right here." Keefe appeared at my side and put his arm over my shoulder.
"Ah," the creepy man growled.
"We'll be going now, sir," Keefe growled back, walking me around the man. As we were trying to pass him, the man grabbed my arm, pulling me away from Keefe and into him. His nails dug into my arm as we wrapped an arm around my shoulders. Hardly three seconds passed before I heard a huge thud and the man fell away from me. I turned around and Keefe was standing over the man, who was laying on the ground with blood pouring from his nose and teeth.
"Keefe!" I shouted. He turned to me, put a finger to his lips and held out his hand urgently. I took it and we dashed down the sidewalk. We met up with the rest of the group and speed walked the rest of the way to our car. Fitz and Biana flew into the drivers and passenger seats and the rest of us piled into the back.
"Are you alright?" Keefe asked before I could even close the door.
"Yeah, I'm fine, thank you," I told him.
"No need to thank me, that was absolutely disgusting."
The car started moving and the lights of the city faded to dark. Keefe and I slumped in our seats, Keefe's arm finding its way around my shoulders. I laid back and rested my head on his shoulder.
