One summer day, a ginger cat and an adventurous dog went on a walk together. They walked through a park, a school playground, and some neighborhoods. Quite suddenly, they stumbled upon a fair. The two animals stared in astonishment at the merry-go-rounds and the roller coasters. The cat was the first to speak.
"Wellllll," she purred," I've heard of these places before from the other cats, but I never dreamed they could be so big."
The dog, Tucker, spoke next.
"Every summer, my owners leave for a day to go to a place called the 'fair.' They come back smelling of popcorn and sweets. Do you think this could be the place, Daisy?" he asked the cat.
"Maybe," Daisy meowed. "I think we should go inside and find out."
Daisy and Tucker peered cautiously around for the entrance. They quickly noticed people coming in through a big gate.
"We can't go that way," declared Daisy.
"I agree," barked Tucker. "There are too many people who could spot us."
They looked around for another entrance and soon found one. It was a narrow path that white-tailed deer had created. The dog and cat could both see deer tracks on the muddy path. Tucker trotted up to the entrance. The path lead through the forest. He could see a small gap in the trees where the inside of the fair could be seen.
"Come on, Daisy!" he barked excitedly.
"Quiet," she whispered, but it was too late. People saw the two pets and began to approach them. Daisy and Tucker ran along the path. The only sound Tucker could hear was the quick thump, thump of his heart, pounding as though it would burst out of his chest at any moment. Then, the noisy footsteps stopped. The dog and cat stopped to catch their breath. They both realized this was the entrance to the fair.
"Wow," meowed Daisy.
"I can't believe it!" barked Tucker.
They ran into the fair. There was popcorn littering the floor, and soda cans lying on the ground, still half full. The cat's eyes stretched wide as she saw a game called "Catch a Fish". Of course, Tucker had other ideas. He was eyeing the hamburger stand, waiting for a man to turn around.
"I could go for a nice hamburger right now," he barked to Daisy, but she already had her head in the "Catch a Fish" game. Tucker sneaked up behind her and pushed her in. She let out a startled mrrrow. When she came up, she had a fish in her mouth.
"Seriously?" she rolled her eyes.
"You should have seen the look on your face!" laughed Tucker.
"Hey, you look like this fish." She pushed the slimy goldfish towards Tucker who pushed it back. "I'll get my revenge," she hissed.
"In your dreams. Now let's get those hamburgers!"
The two pets approached the hamburger stand. The young clerk was giving a family some hamburgers. Tucker noticed multiple people sitting at tables that were covered by red-checkered tablecloths. He quickly decided that stealing a hamburger would be nearly impossible. Then an idea formed in his head.
"Daisy, stay here."
Tucker slowly approached a garbage can. He put his paws on it and the garbage can toppled over. He dug through the garbage until he came upon what he had been looking for. He picked up a half-eaten hamburger and carried it to Daisy.
"Dinner is served," he declared.
"No thanks," mewed Daisy, wrinkling up her nose in disgust. "I'll stick with my fish."
Once both animals had finished their meals, they began to discuss what they should do next.
"I say we go on the roller coaster," Tucker suggested.
"No way! I've seen those things going down their tracks at such high speeds that I'd cough up a hairball!" Daisy meowed. "What about the merry-go-round? I've never ridden on a horse before."
"You goofy furball! Those aren't real horses! They're just plastic horses that go up and down."
"A roller coaster goes up and down, too."
"What about the Ferris wheel? It's very slow." Tucker suggested.
"Sure. Let's go!" meowed Daisy excitedly.
Daisy took off toward the Ferris wheel with Tucker hot on her tail. They were surprised to find that there was no one in line. In fact, there was no one else at the fair. What the animals didn't understand was that the fair had closed a few minutes before. Tucker jumped onto one of the passenger seats.
"Why isn't it moving?" he asked Daisy.
"I think it's turned off," she mewed. "Here's the button. Sit down while I turn it on." She pressed the button and the lights on the Ferris wheel flickered on. The machine lurched forward and Daisy yowled in triumph.
"Here I go! To the top of the world!" Tucker howled.
As Tucker gained height, Daisy had an idea. She knew how to get her revenge. When Tucker's passenger car was as high as it could go, Daisy turned the machine off. Tucker looked down at her.
"Why isn't it working?"
"I don't know," she lied.
"Get me down!" he barked.
"I can't!" she cried. She could hardly stop herself from laughing.
Then Tucker did something she hadn't expected. He got up from where he was sitting and leaped for the nearest passenger car. His paws frantically scraped the edge of it. Daisy knew she'd gone too far. She tried to turn the Ferris wheel on, but it wouldn't start. She knew that one wrong paw step, and he'd plummet to the ground.
"Jump!" she yowled.
With a massive leap, he hauled himself up. He slowly began to make his way down. She could hardly watch. Leap, scramble. Leap, scramble. He was two passenger seats away when his paws gave way under him. He began to fall. With one last attempt to start the Ferris wheel, Daisy hit the button with all her might, which was not very much. The Ferris wheel started up again, and Tucker reached frantically for the nearest seat. He grabbed it and clung to it the rest of the way down.
"Would you like a turn?" he asked Daisy mischievously.
"No thanks," she mewed. "Maybe another day."
"Let's go again next week!" barked Tucker.
"Only if we can go on the merry-go-round," Daisy mewed stubbornly.
"It's a deal."
And together, the two friends walked home side by side.
