I sit on my front porch lost in some of my best memories my mind goes back to that winter's day when I became a part of Mr. Tunstall's family. the year was 1885 and it was a very cold winter I was homeless and on my own and on the streets of Lincoln County New Mexico thanks to my drunk ass stepfather my mother had died from T.B. we hadn't laid her to rest very long when my stepfather takes my stepbrother Joe and leaves leaving me on the streets to fend for my self. yes I got into trouble that is how I keep my self alive. I always slept in old barns and chicken coops but the weather was very cold and getting colder so I slept in old barns. one morning I woke up hungry I looked over my food supplies and they were running out I knew that I had to get some more food to keep my self alive so I went into town to get some more food I hide so I would get caught I heard some people talking out side of a store the sign that hung above the store read John Tunsall's store. I tried to stay hidden but my hunger had the better of me so I slipped into the store and took as much food as I could carry and ran back to the old barn where I staying. I had just started to eat some of the food that I took I looked up and saw an young Mexican/Indian standing in front of me I backed up against the wall I didn't know if he was going hurt me or let me live but in jail he held out his hand to me and said that his name was Chavez and that he wasn't going to hurt or kill me I took his hand and told him that my name was William Bonney he looked at me and smiled he had to go because he was being by his adopted father John Tunstall. later that night he came back wrapped me in some warm blankets. the next morning he took me to meet Mr. Tunstall who didn't hand me over to the law he took me into his family Chavez and I became close when I would have nightmares from my life before I met him and Mr. Tunstall Chavez hold me and tell me Chivato it is alright you are safe now they can't hurt you anymore. and I felt better after that . it has been 30 years since that time. I now own Mr. Tunstall's ranch and Chavez owns a ranch next to my ranch and we get together every chance that we get. he is still my older brother and I am still his Chivato and his baby brother and that will never change.
