This was me during the summer of 2013.
I look like a baby. This was a few short months after I heard what I thought to be the first Fall Out Boy song I had ever heard (My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark).
Flashback to that fateful night.
It was sometime in February of 2013. Every night since I was very little, I always listen to some type of music while I sleep because it helps me with anxiety and other things that keep me up at night. It usually doesn't matter what it is as long as something's playing in the background so it's not dead quiet in the room.
I always listened to the Top 40 radio at night (pretty stereotypical of someone my age at that time). My local station I was listening to at the time decided they'd play My Songs for their first time. They didn't say the name of the artist until after the song ended. I just remember listening to the song and just thinking "are you serious?" It was 2013 and other songs that were popular at the time were by Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, and Taylor Swift, just to name a few. This was a very different sound to what I was used to hearing... a sound that I was immediately attracted to.
During the song, when he hits the super high note on "fire", I couldn't picture one singer at the time who could do that, and that was something that really stood out to me.
After the song ended, the radio anchor said that "that was the newest single from Fall Out Boy." I had never heard of this artist. My initial thoughts: "is this one person?", "a band?"
I had so many thoughts within that five minutes after hearing that song.
A few days went by and I hadn't really thought about them or the song that much. I would say it was about two weeks later when I was listening to what was iTunes Radio at the time and I'm pretty sure it was on the "Pure Pop" station... I hit play and I heard these lyrics a few seconds later:
"I don't know where you're going but do you got room for one more troubled soul."
I knew that voice sounded familiar. This was the next single off of the album that I had heard but it wasn't the next single after My Songs... I hadn't heard The Phoenix yet. I remember loving Alone Together a little more than My Songs after that. There was something interesting about his voice during that song that I was really attracted to. I ended up listening to that song on repeat for the longest time after that.
But after me liking their page on Facebook (my only social platform at the time) and a few more listens of their singles, that was it for a while.
